TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[He shakes his head, and his smile disappears a bit (seems like it was going) and looks Edgeworth in the eye. There is something honest about Cary, even if he has a crooked smile.]

I'm a prosecutor in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. It's just bad manners on my part, but you get an earful of a witness deposition and you can't help but pay attention.

[Your timing is perfect Artemis, and Zatanna is going to show it by giving you a hug. Someone who can fill her in on what the heck happened to bring them to Florida and hopefully in more detail than she got in the debrief.

She lets go and glances around the crowd hoping to maybe see another familiar face that's just keeping back. It isn't even anyone specific just looking for anyone else from the team. But she doesn't see the others and turns her attention back to Artemis. Mostly as she addresses the crowd,]

I'm so happy you all want to meet me, but could I have a minute to chat privately with my friend.

[She gives the crowd exactly two minutes to disperse a little before marching to the nearest alley to get answers.]

Okay so what happened? Because I don't think even Witch Boy could pull this level of crazy off.

[Whoa, sorry Ichigo, were you going somewhere? Because once he sees Ichigo lift his leg to take his first step away, Dio stops time and places his hands to the teenager's shoulders, turning Ichigo around to face him, then returns to standing in the exact same spot he was previously.

Once time resumes, it's like Ichigo is suddenly facing Dio without any explanation. The shift is instantaneous and inexplicable.]

[Slipping his finger free of the page he marked, the judge holds the paper out to Jayden.]

Here, then. [If you're so interested. And don't worry, there are no hidden forks in the folds. Of course, forks aren't nearly as versatile as fire, and they are nowhere near as flammable as paper, either. Not that this situation calls for setting anything ablaze. Not yet, anyway.] It's interesting news, isn't it?

[Yuri returns to the stand and browses for a new paper, but he does not discount the teen.]

Purportedly, the history of this world often mirrors that of other worlds. Then again, there are also times when its history is completely adrift of what the majority of imPorts claim to be true.

[Based upon Jayden's reaction, Yuri would categorize the teen in the latter of the two groups.]

It is a complicated business, but resisting this reality will only make things unnecessarily difficult.

[Mabel practically bounces her way down the street, grinning at everything and waving at all the citizens holding cameras. The picture of preteen enthusiasm is spoiled only slightly by the herd of little pink pigs following behind her wherever she goes. Mabel's thrilled by this new summertime development, and she's going to enjoy every single second of it.

Which means providing for her new best friends, Waddles Junior numbers one through five. Mabel stops by the nearest stranger, tapping them on the arm and politely waiting until she has their attention before speaking.]

Hello there, friend I haven't met yet! Can you tell us the way to the malt shop?

[She nods. Brushing off her gloved hands Zatanna waves her hands like she's about to perform some sort of trick. It's an attention tactic her father taught her. Crowds respond to it well focusing on her so she can explain what will happen next. It's also as much to quiet the children who have started chanting "doggy do trick".]

If everyone will give us some room. My friends companion will wow you with stunning acrobatics. But first, kids could you come down. It'll be safer for you over here.

[She motions for the children on Wolf's back to join the rest of crowd so he can do his tricks without hurting any of his passengers. And sure enough the kids climb down and give him hugs and wish ask him to do something really awesome just for them. She has no idea if Wolf will oblige but she has high hopes for his performance.]

[Conner doesn't exactly move away from Zatanna but does shift to her other side to give them both a little space for whatever it is that's going to happen. Sure enough as the kids climb off of Wolf, they do so with Conner too in order to get a better look.

The wolf looks at the children who are already chanting in the crowd and woofs at them. It seems to quiet them down a little and instead they look on in awe.]

[Hopefully if Weiss and Ruby are around they can at least find each other-- though knowing Weiss, if she's around, they'll all hear about it soon enough. Yang gives Blake a look from the corner of her eye, and then nods slowly.]

Normally, I'd argue with you about that.

[Yang heaves a sigh and rolls her eyes, pushing away from her teammate with a huff.]

But man, talk about making it hard to have a normal day.

[Jayden hesitates for a second, then takes the paper. The vibes from this dude are still creeptastic, but the paper is more interesting. He skims the article, his brow furrowing deeper and deeper. By the end, his teeth are gritted.]

It's government propaganda.

[He shakes his head and tosses the paper away in disgust. The strange guy's condescending tone isn't helping his mood. He's been told a few too many things lately that he's been expected to go along with without question, and it's pissing him off.]

Yeah, well, I didn't ask to be brought to this reality. Especially not to fight my own people.

[Piper does not like being the center of attention. Unfortunately, being a daughter of Aphrodite means that she has to be just on general principle. She hates it, but there's not much she can do about it other than to be polite while making her escape.

She sighs as she sits down at a nearby cafe and tries to be as unassuming as possible while nursing a much-needed Coca-cola. Gods of Olympus, she's forgotten how hectic the mortal world can be! Piper is just starting to understand how her dad feels when he's in the spotlight all the time.

I doubt that, though I can see how it might be easier to believe. [A beat as he watches the teen toss the paper, followed by a quiet sigh. ] Forgive me, but I believe you'll find a trash receptacle over there.

[Yuri indicates in which direction, then takes a moment to flesh from his wallet the correct change for two papers. Paying the vendor, he glances once more to Jayden and studies him, interest renewed.]

It would appear we have something in common. My name is Yuri Petrov.

[And he is also not interested in fighting his own people. Unless, of course, they are sinners who must repent for their crimes of injustice, the same as any other. When it comes to evil, Yuri does not discriminate.]

[The blonde that settles in next to her hails a waitress with a gloved hand, smiling wryly at Piper in greeting. She places her order as the waitress arrives- Chocolate milkshake, heavy on the whipped cream please!- and then leans her elbow on the counter and her chin in her hand.]

[Piper can't help returning the smile. She's not even met this girl for very long and she's got the feeling that they'll get along just fine.]

Yeah, you'd think some of these people haven't seen a teenage girl before. Maybe I should get a bracelet to cover this tattoo up?

[ Dorian, on the other hand, loved being the center of attention. So, as he spots Piper trying to worm her way out of a crowd, he can't help but be interested. Someone trying to be unassuming, trying to hide from the crowd interested him--especially because Dorian himself felt interested in her for some reason.

Following her to the cafe, he watches her for a moment, before sitting down next to her, small smile on his face. ]

[She raises a hand, showing off the metal around her wrists, and rolls her eyes.]

Not that I'm not used to staring. Or crowds. But it's a little excessive, you know?

[She looks at them with some curiosity. She doesn't know many people who fight with their fists, especially since the kids she know prefer swords or bows.]

At least we're not dealing with the media. Those guys can be insane sometimes.

[Honestly, Piper hopes they never have to deal with the media, but it'll probably happen.]

I'm more used to being low-profile, to be honest. I haven't really done anything but show up, and all of a sudden it's like you're a celebrity....

[Jayden looks over at the trash can. Regretting his anger, he crouches down and picks the paper back up.]

I'll recycle it.

[It might be handy to hang onto, for now.]

[Well, assuming the money in his wallet is the same currency this America uses. But before he can dig it out and check, the man introduces himself. Jayden's eyes widen. He may look like a meth head, but someone coming from the same place as him might be able to help him... with info, at the very least. He glances around to make sure no one else will listen in, then looks back to Yuri hopefully.]

Thanks, [ he replied, slipping in next to Piper. With a sigh, he looked out the window. ] It's too damn hot out there. Combine it with all the people and really, it's just ridiculous.

[ However, that small smile still plays on his face. It's obvious that, despite all his bitching and moaning, Dorian is (in part) teasing a little bit. ]

[Yang pauses to think about how the bands back home get hounded, and promptly winces and nods.]

Okay yeah, totally agreed. That and fanclubs. Granted, I haven't been here long enough to gather one but I mean... if they're that enthusiastic just because of our weird tattoos imagine how much worse it'd be if we were, you know, good at the hero thing.

[Which, granted, she is. It's what she's training for in a way, after all.

She brightens as her milkshake and a slice of cake- 'on the house'- is set in front of her. Someone obviously overheard her, whoops.]

Gotta say, I can't complain about free stuff though.

"Whoa- okay, okay, I guess I have time for a few pictures?"

Taking off Ember Celica in order to check on the firing mechanisms had been, in hindsight, a stupid, stupid mistake. The instant someone caught sight of the glow on her wrists, now free of the metal she usually wore around them, they'd drawn attention to her. Their attention had drawn a crowd, and before long, she was pulling her shotgauntlets back on hurriedly in order to avoid anyone else getting a glimpse- but too late, damage done.

Of course, in situations like this, the fact that she was a tall, pretty blonde didn't help any, and there was no shortage of camera clicks and hoots from the peanut gallery until--

"Okay that's enough!"

Shoulders shaking in irritation, fire blazing around her, Yang's shout overshadowed the crowd milling around her and her flames silenced them-- for all of ten seconds before they were ooh-ing and ahh-ing over her powers.

"Can you guys please just give it a rest? I kind of have some really important stuff to do and this is making it really hard-!"

Nope. No luck at all. She sighs and drags a hand down her face.

"Fine, fine- but ten more minutes and then I'm out!"

...if they let her leave, and that's looking more unlikely by the moment. Help?
