TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ Robin's on his way to the scene of the action when he sees a familar flash of red and black and hears the familiar sounds of property damage. No way. Could it be—? Oh yeah, it is. Well, it's a good thing Robin's here in time to help— or not, he thinks, as Superboy makes quick work of the situation.

. . . Oookay, crisis averted. Or, well, close enough.

Robin weaves himself into the crowd, a familar face in familiar sunglasses, applauding politely with a cheeky little grin on his face. ]

[There is very little property damage involved - considering who it was handling the crisis. The car had seen better days and there was a lovely crater in the pavement but all-in-all, not bad for Superboy. At first his gaze passes right over Robin, not entirely expecting to any members of the team around this place but it doesn't take long before it shoots back to him. He ignores the policemen and awed crowd even though they're all talking at once.

Superboy is a mix of relieved and unsettled to see that this place has snatched Robin as well. Last he knew, the Boy Wonder was off doing some Dynamic Duo thing or maybe actually celebrating Thanksgiving -- okay, most likely the former.

Robin being here meant there was a plan. Plans were not exactly Superboy's forte. And whatever the Plan was, it wasn't going to happen while he was surrounded by a bunch of on-lookers. So he heads into the crowd towards Robin but Superboy doesn't stop to talk to him and instead moves past him towards an alley. With the show over, the crowd starts to dissipate.]

[ Robin follows him into the alley with all the practiced, stealthy ease of someone who spends most of his time lurking in shadows — no easy feat in sunny Florida, but he makes do. Once he's sure they're reasonably out of earshot: ]

Nice entrance. Very understated.

[How Robin always manages to do that is beyond him. Not even his superhearing can pick up when the younger teen comes and goes. Superboy crosses his arms over his chest and frowns. The giant genetically-altered Wolf sits near the mouth of the alley, watching people walk by on the street.]

What else was I supposed to do? [The criminals were caught, the kids saved and he even managed to not destroy that much.]

[performance]

I'm kidding, I'm kidding. You did great.

[ NOT THE SUPERPOUT. His smile softens a little. ]

I actually missed your style.

[projectkr]

[Superboy's plan of action usually involves hitting things - that's why other people make the plan. That superpout turns into a small smile.]

Next time I'll save something for you.

Any idea of what exactly is going on around here? [He got the spiel that every new imPort gets but if anyone knows the truth, it would be Robin.]

[performance]

[ Robin really, really wishes that was the case. Every time the team looks to him like he should know what's going on just reminds him that he doesn't. ]

That's a looong, confusing story.

[If Robin doesn't know everything already then there is something definitely strange going on here. Don't worry, Superboy will help him figure it out (and by figure it out, that means helping him infiltrate places). Long and confusing, huh?]

Any of the highlights I need to know about?

[performance]

Well, you just missed virtual paintball. With real fake death.

[He actually cringes at that.]

I've had enough of real fake death type of situations so I'll be glad that I missed out on that one.

No kidding. I really didn't need the reminder.

This place is fun like that.

I can't believe you'd go willingly after last time.

Remind me to not participate in the next virtual activity.

They didn't exactly tell us about that part. I mean, I was suspicious going in, but...

[ Robin shrugs in a "could've been worse" kind of way. ]

The prize was information. I had to try.

Let's just keep M'gann from any of those things if she ever shows up.

Not this time. And just for the record? This is totally the kind of thing they do here. Weird mind games. Make it look like they're being open and honest, and then spring death paintball on us.

[ A sigh. Maybe this isn't the best "welcome to Heropa" conversation ever. Sorry, Supey. ]

Sounds a little paranoid, I know, but yeah. For now, I think that's our best option.

Better to be a little paranoid now than pay for it later. [He pats Robin on the shoulder and gives him a small smile. Don't worry, dude, he's with you.]
