TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[There's no tip jar out Wally. But if they feel to pass a couple bucks her way or even their loose change she won't tell them no.

And while she's waiting she takes the time to mutter a quick spell under her breath:]

Wols mih nwod. [Just to ensure that the incredibly non-magical and basic card trick she's going to do isn't fouled up by his inhuman speed.]

Focus KF. [And she's shuffling the deck first doing a nifty little thing where she breaks the deck into four apparently equal piles before finishing it off with a bridge and fans them out.] Pick a card any card.

[Something feels...weird but before he can pinpoint it she calls him "KF" and makes him look at her suspiciously. Nobody really shortens his name like that (except for Robin and then a couple of the team members who've picked it up from him) so it's kind of weird that she pops it out like it's no big deal.

Hmm.]

Ahh, going with a classic. Probably a good idea, since I'm gonna debunk you and all. Don't want me to reveal all your trade secrets. [kf shut up] It's okay, it's okay, I'll be a good sport about it. Nowwww which... [He's pretty damn obnoxious; enough to make a few audience members scoff and roll their eyes, even if one or two snickers and elbows his friend in the side. He runs a finger down the cards, pretends to pull one before abruptly changing his mind and grabbing another.

Heh. Jack of Hearts. Totally fitting.] All right, so am I putting this back so you can pull it out later? Psh.

[temptedfate]

[It isn't a big deal, she's spent enough time around Robin at this point that it sort of just rolls off the tongue when she isn't paying attention. Which she's only half doing since she's focusing more on completing the card trick and less on what she's saying to Wally.]

Well, more like a classic with a touch of personal flair. [All the while she's got this bemused look on her face as he goes on about how he's going to debunk her. For a boy who has been up close and personal with Doctor Fate like she has (and she doesn't usually like to think about her short stint as Nabu's host) he has a funny way of dealing with magic.]

Show it to a couple people first and then slip it back in the deck.

[She waits still holding the fanned out cards to him. Enjoy sticking your foot in your mouth Wally because she won't be pulling your card at all.]

[DR FATE IS DIFFERENT ALSO HE USES ADVANCED SCIENCE SOMEHOW WALLY JUST DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN IT YET!!!!!

Once he figures out she's Zatara's daughter he'll probably stop being a jerk, but for now? He's...well, going to continue being a jerk. An overconfident jerk.

He gestures over two girls around his age and they giggle as he leans over and shows them his card.] I know, right? Right? Come see me later, we'll get lunch sometime. It's in the cards. [He grins like he's so damn clever and tucks the card back into the deck, waving at the girls and blowing them a kiss.]

[Rolling her eyes Zatanna snaps the deck of cards closed. The cheese factor of his lines was worse than watching him eat.

Moving on, she approaches a young man nearby, her smile bright, and asks him to shuffle the cards and pick up the top card and show it to the audience. She isn't going to even go into how fitting the Jack of Hearts is.]

Is that your card KF? [She's positive that it is, she's done this trick enough times that she knows that the person she asks to shuffle the deck has a negligible effect on the outcome.]

[runningstart]

[Wally squints. He'd been watching and he didn't see any slight of hand in there at all.]

Yeah, [he mutters, and the crowd appropriately 'ooohs' and 'ahhhs' and applauds for her while he scoffs and rolls his eyes.] Oh puhlease! She probably just slipped it into the deck so that it'd be on the top when he finished, it's all armchair psychology and counting cards.

[temptedfate]

[She should have expected that reaction. Especially given how he brought himself to her attention. Still she holds her composure and takes a bow for the audience.

For heaven's sake he was the one that put the card into the deck back into the deck, all she did was close the fanned deck. Turning she levels a thoroughly unimpressed look in his direction.]

I'd be happy to discuss your concerns, Kid Flash. In private.

[No point in ruining the magic for those that actually believe in it.]

[runningstart]

[Kid Flash rolls his eyes and waves to the two teenage girls who are looking much less impressed with him than they were a few minutes ago. Nobody likes a jerk, after all.]

Sure, sure. [Great, one of these types, the ones who are all self-righteous about their "craft" or whatever. Once the crowd disperses, he follows her over to a fairly empty park area and folds his arms with a sigh.] All right, let's get this over with.

[Honestly she isn't going to get self-righteous so much as demand to know what his deal is. And she paces away arms crossing over her chest.]

What was your deal KF? You have never acted so dismissive of my magic before.

[She's careful not to get loud. She doesn't want to cause a scene even if she's had it up to here with him being an pain in her rear.]

It was a card trick, of course there was a certain level of card counting and sleight of hand, but you don't have to ruin it for those that enjoy stage magic.

[runningstart]

[-uh. Okay, not what he was expecting. He squints at her, puts that genius brain to work and comes up with a conclusion:]

You...know me. Personally.

You get hit in the head? We met a couple months ago, Robin practically ran over M'gann in an effort to be the first to introduce himself. Ring any bells.

[This isn't funny. How could he not know who she is?]

[runningstart]

[BIG WIDE GRIN HERE] Nope, I don't remember that because I'm either from the past or I have amnesia, but did he now? Tell me more.

[temptedfate]

[Backpedal, definitely time to backpedal.] I think I'll let you remember or live that for yourself.

[runningstart]

[Wow no fun.

Kid Flash shifts his weight and leans up against a drinking fountain, giving her a newly appraising look.] So you're part of the team? What's your name? [He's already got a hunch considering what he knows about the league, what with the magician thing and all, but better to confirm than to look dumb. Again.]

[temptedfate]

[Well she couldn't exactly justify potentially changing future events could she? He'll just have to find out for himself.] Zatanna...Zatara. In case my first name doesn't give it all away to start with.

[runningstart]

I knew you were Zatara's kid. [Wally might not be a believer of magic, but he will admit that whatever the heck Zatara does is mad powerful.] Uh, sorry about the heckling out there. Didn't know who you were. [which just means he'd have harassed any stranger like a jerk but hey what can you do]

[Zatanna nods, accepting his apology. No point in holding a grudge.] I guess I forgive you in that case. Guess I should take your brakes off, too.

[runningstart]

My b- [Wally squints before jabbing a finger in her direction.] That was you?! Uncool, babe, way uncool. You don't cap a guy's powers on the first date.

[temptedfate]

[She shrugs] Kcab ot lamron. There back to your sound barrier breaking self. I thought it was a card trick not a date. [And she thought he had a crush on Megan until Halloween.]
