TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[The simultaneous similarities and differences were no less jarring, even after several exchanges.]

Rad. [Wally slings the arm around her shoulders again and they break away from the main imPort group. He takes her along the docks and starts to point out all the restaurants before he pauses.] Uhh actually, do you even eat? 'Cause like ninety percent of the locations important to me are about food.

[looksfine]

[The shoulder thing was also strange. Very few made physical contact with her for long durations of time. Except Drusa, and that had been...well...]

My systems do not require food or drink to refuel, no. [Since he asked; she would have been content to listen to him explain regardless of level of importance to her, personally.] Nor do I require sleep cycles. Beyond extenuating circumstances, I am capable of indefinite self-recharging.

[Something which Aya had never really questioned, because it was precisely the same as how a Lantern Battery worked. Should she run out of energy, she would fall into stasis mode. Then, it would only be a matter of time. Otherwise, she was good to go.]

What of the other ten percent?

Those are also food. I was just trying to make it sound less like I have an obsession. [HA. He's so funny.] Sooo, you can self-recharge; that's cool. Do you have an internal reactor that helps with that, or is it not polite to ask about a lady's nuclear fusion capabilities on the first date?

[looksfine]

[No offense taken, although the latter part of the question caused her head to tilt slightly in confusion.]

Date?

[runningstart]

Not that we're on a date or anything. [except for him completely acting like they are] It's just a saying. "Don't blankity-blank on the first date." Don't kiss on the first date, don't share military secrets on the first date...you don't have to actually be on a date to use it. It's funnier if you're not actually.

[looksfine]

...it is?

[Aya was young and often naive in the ways of certain cultural social expectations. This was one occasion, however, when she knew better than to accept such an explanation at face-value. Her expression mirrored that sentiment.]

I have never found much humor in the purpose misleading of others. Particularly involving a personal occasion that is meant to be mutually agreed upon by both parties before establishing as such.

[runningstart]

Whoa whoa, no misleading going on here. This is not a date, and that really is a saying. [KF realizes that maybe his arm around her shoulders is not helping with that and he yanks it back. Okay. Hands to himself around the GL babe that could probably put him into the ground if she tried. Why are all space cops such insane powerhouses, anyway?] Ask Hal next time you see him if you don't believe me. I promise.

[looksfine]

I will be certain to do that.

[Hal was her go-to person for just about anything, anyway.]

[Strange enough, the moment that was settled, Aya's expression softened back into the pleasant smile it had worn not a moment prior. All traces of possible annoyance or exasperation--not that there had been much to start--were gone.]

Shall we continue on the tour?

I would be most interested in hearing about this city's defense systems.

[runningstart]

[Whew. Bullet dodged.]

You're lookin' at 'em. [Wally gestures to himself, points out a couple other people in uniform. Not too many people choose superhero identities though, it's strange.] Aside from normal military and Coast Guard stuff, it's really just people like you and me. At least, that's what they told us. We're here to keep people safe.

[looksfine]

[For now, yes.]

May I ask what is lacking in their military systems that they saw need to "kidnap" individuals such as ourselves?

[runningstart]

I dunno, super speed and a Green Lantern? I literally have no idea. [KF scratches his arm as they walk down along the docks.] Kind of seems like they're stockpiling people like they would war heads. Apparently the Cold War is still on, so.

[looksfine]

[Cold War meant very little to her, but War was something Aya was all too familiar with.]

And the enemy?

[runningstart]

Apparently Russia, but I'm not down with that. I'll do the same purse-snatcher rundowns I always do, but I'm not gonna infiltrate some military base and steal national secrets. I don't like that.

[looksfine]

[Being slightly more familiar with inter-planetary, let alone international, infiltration, Aya did not see so much of the same problems Wally did.]

Is that our primary objective? To obtain information?

...I have succeeded in similar missions in the past. [Well, she got caught, and was severely damaged, but she did get them the data. So that counted as a success.]

[runningstart]

Yeah I'm not so much worried about success rates as I am about the fact that I don't fight political wars for a reason. Can you imagine how bad it would be if one single country got their hands on just one of you guys? [Wally shakes his head.] Nope. That's why we've gotta be impartial. Mostly.

[looksfine]

["One of you guys" could honestly mean...any number of things. One of you Green Lanterns. One of you Artificial Intelligences. One of you...individuals with extraordinary abilities.]

Do you not have the option of refusal?
