TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ She would never have been allowed to come here on her own. Her parents would have freaked. Now, being here . . . the thrill isn't there any more. At least everything smelled nice. Too bad she couldn't eat most of it. She sniffs the air a few times. Good times ]

[ Okay, after everything, this? This she can do. She embiggens herself, scooping the kids out of the way and leaping out of the road onto the pavements. Just an average day for Ms. Marvel! (not) ]

[Lila had started running as soon as she saw the car coming towards the kids, but she knew even as she moved that she wouldn't reach them in time, so seeing someone else swoop in to save the day is such a relief.

But she still keeps running, coming over to crouch down next to the kids as they say their thank yous to Kamala and assure her they're okay. Lila gives them a quick once over anyway, making sure they definitely are fine before looking at Kamala.]

[ Erk. That's not how superhoeres talk, is it? The awestruck look on the stranger's face makes her rethink her dialogue. Snappy dialogue can make (or break) fandom ]

[ yep, this is totally what heroes do. she zips after the car in full superhero regalia—Kaine had vouched to keep tonight to himself, but he's definitely missing all the action! she'd relay to him the heroics at babbling speed when she returned from her rounds. she's heading up the car, but draws back in mid-air during her levitation when she sees A GIANT HAND moving to scoop the children out of the way. ]

Ah—! Kids like ice cream!

[ of course, things never go that smoothly, as the car shrieks around the corner, she can already hear the kids burst out in tears. so in the process of Kamala setting down the children and the children looking like they're about to have a heart attack, she reaches out with her empathetic powers, floating upside down. ]

It's okay, don't cry. You're super safe now, because a superhero saved you.

[ amazingly, that actually seems to stop the water works right away. there were perks of literal emotional manipulation. ]

[ They're staring at her now, eagerly, and for a brief moment, Kamala just wants to hide. She was never good at being scrutinized (presentations were her Achilles heel), but then she remembered, she wasn't just Kamala right now ]

That's right!

[ She puts her hands on her hips, looking pleased ] Ms. Marvel to the rescue!

Ms. Marvel?

[ there's a little quirk of her head in response. it's possible that it fuels some recognition. (luckily for Kamala, it doesn't.)

the children look quickly between them and Aracely looks between the children and Kamala. ]

You can say Ms. Marvel saved you. And I'm Hummingbird. We're superheroes! Superheroes are here to save people. When you go back to your parents, you can tell them that.

But try to avoid the part where you nearly got run over or they might worry.

[ Hummingbird? She wracks her brain to recognize that title. ]

[ don't these things usually come with a snappy moral of the story kind of thing? Kaine would say that she's been watching too many Saturday morning cartoons. ]

[ whispering back at her ] I don't have a catchphrase yet. What else am I supposed to say? I thought saving kids would come after . . . everything else! Like boss fights.

[ totally nodding like she gets it. (she only kind of gets it.) she can, however, catch a few details that Kamala doesn't exactly want to make apparent. it's sort of the thing about her, Aracely seemed to have the uncanny ability to catch whatever emotions and thoughts were in the basic vicinity. ]

Oh, well. Maybe the boss fight was the car.

Rrrr, bad car!

But now the kids are saved? So, super yay!

[ Steph had been too far away to be able to make it in time, so for a few seconds she had been fearing for the worst. until Kamala did her thing, anyway. AWESOME. ]

Not exactly by choice though. I feel like more than half of all the heroes here are doing it just because they're being forced to. And that's-- [ whoops getting a little too into hero talk. ]

I just kind of think it's counterproductive that way, you know?

Not everyone is into this whole thing. I'm pretty sure there's probably butt loads of young powered teens who use their skills to pass algebra instead of sending baddies to jail.

[ It's hard to comprehend anyone NOT using their powers to help others. But maybe Kamala was just that different? No, all her heroes do the right thing. ]

Well, that's why you need to do the best that you can to make up for all the others who don't fight for whatever reason.
