now don't be rude

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

    02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

    03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

    04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

It's mine.

[She lifts a brow at him, taking a sip of her own milkshake while giving him yet another assessing glance. She's quietly thanking whatever powers exist in the universe that she's not the only European stuck in this hellish swamp state.]

I'm part of a team back home, my uniform is made of the same material my brother's is. [She shrugs slightly.] It's the best suited for traveling at high speeds which we do often, both during missions and between.

[ A team, where she travelled at high speeds. Really, at least in Dorian's mind, that offered him three options: some sort of search and rescue type mission, black ops, or superheroes. She didn't look black ops. And that was hardly the type of uniform for search and rescue. So, superhero it was.

And at that moment, Dorian briefly thanked God for superhero ladies.
]

Let me guess: you've been brought in by the porter and, unlike most of us, you're already an actual superhero?

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-07-26 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call myself that, but I have experience with this sort of thing, yes.

[And experience on the other side, though she's not about to advertise that to anyone who doesn't know. She's earned her place on her team, and the last thing she wants to do is inspire any feelings that she's not trustworthy here.]

I assume that isn't the case with you?
brushoff: (teeny tiny smile!)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-07-26 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course not, [ Dorian remarked, with a laugh, as if the idea of being a superhero was utterly laughable. ] My world never had anything like superpowers or superheroes.

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-07-27 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[A world unevolved. The idea is interesting to her distantly. As a concept. The idea of being human and powerless, however, evokes a feeling of unease in her, one she covers with a smile.]

A shame, but if that wasn't the case, what powers would you choose. Assuming you had the picking of it, of course.
brushoff: (well yeah if you THINK that)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-07-28 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you didn't know? They stick you with powers here if you don't have any. [ said with a small shrug. ]

Apparently a healing factor and enhanced reflexes fit me.
doesthemath: (pic#5293760)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-07-28 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting combination. Enhanced healing and reflexes are formidable, depending on how enhanced they are.

[She tilts her head to the side and gives him a meaningful look.]

But I am aware that there are powers given here. The question was what would you choose. You can tell a lot about a person based on the choices they make.

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-07-28 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh, he knew the answer to that one because he did choose: immortality. However, here he was Dorian Gray: the eccentric banker, not Dorian Gray: immortal playboy of Wildean fame. So, once again, he swapped back to lying. ]

If I had to pick...I won't lie, healing factor's pretty good. But if I had to pick, I'd go with teleportation. It'd certainly take the time out of travel, at least.

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-07-28 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Teleportation does come in handy, I have to say. Teleporting oneself, teleporting others, there are solid benefits. The entire world becomes your oyster.

[Wanda has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to superpowers, and that one happens to be one she likes. One that's proven to be useful. Therefore, his choice earns him points in her book.]

So does this mean you consider yourself an adventuring sort?

I do, as a matter of fact. I did a lot of traveling in my youth--Europe and beyond. I've settled down a bit now, but wouldn't it be wonderful just to jet off to India for a weekend trip every now and then?
doesthemath: (pic#5293751)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-07-28 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
[If she were the trusting sort, the kind to simply make friends and just go do things with them, she might simply say "Well alright, let's go!" She has the powers, and he doesn't. Why not just go to India? But the man hasn't given his name (and she hasn't given hers) and she's not in a habit of picking people up for trips.]

I'm more for Italy myself, but I take your meaning. Are the powers that be generous enough to gift you with further abilities if you endear yourself to them?
brushoff: (you're trying to use merlin caps)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-07-29 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not that I know of--but it certainly is worth a shot. [ The idea of further adding to his superpowered lottery was wonderful in Dorian's mind. After all, he was used to immortality. But teleporting? That would be something different. ]
doesthemath: (pic#5293873)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-07-29 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
If they do, let me know. I'd be curious to know how far their generosity extends.

[Which she punctuates finally by extending her own hand toward him.]

My name is Wanda, though in this uniform more people likely know me as Scarlet Witch.
brushoff: (teeny tiny smile!)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-07-30 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm Dorian, [ he responded, with a grin as he took her hand in a shake. ] Currently of no super hero alias.
doesthemath: (pic#5293751)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-07-31 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a super hero alias so much as my mutant name. One that reflects me and my abilities, rather than the names of dead men who shared my genes.
brushoff: (well yeah if you THINK that)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-07-31 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm sure that mutant in your world means something so much more than being born with webbed feet or an extra finger.
doesthemath: (pic#)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-08-03 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Mutants are homo superior, evolved for homo sapiens. We have what is called the X-gene, which is what has resulted in our growing into our superhuman powers.

[She shrugs slightly.]

That isn't to say that some mutants haven't evolved in ways that give them features that make them better suited to aquatic environments or additional body parts.
brushoff: (super skeptical bout that)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-08-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose this goes to show just how different terms mean different things in different worlds--my world doesn't have superpowers, so 'mutants' are simply people with physical deformities.
doesthemath: (pic#5293751)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-08-03 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
For now, that may be true. Or perhaps humans of your world just don't recognize the signs of something new and incredible when it's staring them straight in the face.
brushoff: (evil cocaine what?)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-08-03 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Most wouldn't call an extra toe "incredible."
doesthemath: (pic#5293822)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-08-04 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
That depends on how you look at it. It wouldn't be my personal preference but from a more distant, objective view, can you really say in all honesty that actual signs of the evolution of mankind into something more isn't at the very least noteworthy?
brushoff: (if i stare will it work???)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-08-04 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? In my mind, the advances and innovations of mankind are more noteworthy. At least I can see the change in those. I just have to take it on good faith that we're evolving into something more.
doesthemath: (pic#5293746)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-08-05 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
[It's clear that she doesn't agree, but she doesn't disagree entirely either and simply shrugs, turning her attention back to her milkshake before looking back.]

Perhaps. Tell me, what innovations have you seen that seem more noteworthy than people evolving and coming into powers that mankind has never had a history of possessing?
brushoff: (well yeah if you THINK that)

[personal profile] brushoff 2014-08-05 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, my world doesn't have those powers, [ said with a little smirk. ] But I'm only twenty three and technology's changed so much just in that short time.

[ that...is a goddamn lie. he's more like a hundred and fifty. but lol, like he's telling Wanda that. ]
doesthemath: (pic#5293897)

[personal profile] doesthemath 2014-08-08 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I can't deny that that technology has advanced in leaps and bounds, but I'm not entirely certain it's been for the best.

[She shrugs slightly.]

So what's your story anyway?
