TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

No. [There's a woman with a camera asking to take his picture and he's just walking past her as politely as he can manage. Which just makes it seem rude to anyone else, he's tense as more wave and cheer and it's so... backwards.
What is WRONG with everyone? Are they that happy to eventually be destroyed by him? Do they really not realize who he is? No. Of course not, they all think he's a HERO now. How ridiculous is that?
He's been ushered around and into a vehicle and told what he was and where he was and it took everything he had then not to kill everyone. And now? with the masses flocking around them and a few zeroing in on him because of his armor, perhaps? It's truly annoying him to the point he's very near to snapping.
He hears a shutter from in the crowd and a child smiles at him before walking away.
He wants so badly to just forget the idea of a facade and massacre the lot of them. See how much they love him then. But without his army, with out his 8-balls and angels he has no power here. They're geared to handle powerful villians, there are other humans and the like with abilities to match if not destroy him. He couldn't just murder everyone like before. He'd lost the war once, even if he'd wiped out most of humanity doing so, and that was in his own element. Here? He had nothing. He'd have to build from the ground up.
So it was best to slip on that smile he'd practiced so often and play along. Make the people love him, or at least keep them in the dark about his true nature. Make them trust him with their lives and lead the sheep to the slaughter. He'd play the hero as long as he had to to get what he needed from the system.
With the next group of people he smiles warmly. Perhaps he'd been too rude to them. Let them love him and worship him. He'll be the vision of the Archangel humans always dreamed of. He pushes his wings out from his back and spreads them in a grand display, causing one girl to swoon and nearly faint at the sight. He looks picturesque, handsome and perfect and he takes to the sky with a strong flap to show off a bit.
He'll feed them all some lie before being offered a drink at the malt shop. He gladly accepts and goes to have himself a sundae on the house.]
04
[There he is, nearly at the end of his sundae when here comes a car speeding out of control. He looks up as if completely unintrested until he sees the kids on skateboards unaware of the hovering death heading their way. He's content to sit and watch the scene, partially excited for the outcome.
It hits him then, he should probably do something more than just look the part. He sighs, waiting very nearly till it seems to late before making his move.
He steps in front of the car, bends his knees to root himself to the ground as he prepares for impact, unfurling his wings with a snap. His fist meets the top of the car, slamming it down so it's momentum caries it end over end. He catches it with his immense strength, wings flapping and knees bending so he isn't crushed. He stands slowly and throws it down on it's side, keeping it out of harms way and the people inside relatively safe. The driver is trapped unless he crawls across the seats to the passenger door to get out. Which he seems to be wary of the angry angel glaring at him to stay put.
Honestly? Not really giving a damn about the kids with skateboards but when two of them run up and latch onto his waist in thanks he almost bulks. There's an awkward moment before he laughs and pats them on the head and shoos them off.
Ugh, this playing hero business is grating. He knows the cops weren't far behind so he saunters back over to finish his sundae like nothing happened.]
(ooc: Bother him, join him, mock him, ask questions, anything goes in either option!)
04
Another angel? From another world? Wouldn't be the first time, and to be honest, he's just itching to find out more. Never mind the hedonism, curiosity was his biggest temptation.
He waits till the children had run off before flitting over to the others side, his arrival announced by the sound of silent wings. He smiles, half charm, half amused consideration as he looks the other over.]
Not a bad show, really not bad at all. Always nice to see another one of the flock.
no subject
Flock? [He stifles an amused noise at that thought. He hadn't been part of anything in a long time. He ran the show these days, not followed.]
Are there more like us here?
[He'd introduce himself to this unknown angel but he wanted to know for sure if he could find more of them. If there were other angels maybe he could have somewhere to start his army. Assuming they weren't all for humanity now.]
no subject
A few. Though it's clear you're not from the same parts we are.
[His head tilts, considering the other angel, still smiling his knowing smile.]
So... Who are you?
no subject
He offers the other a warm smile, though something seems off in his expression, perhaps it's not quite reaching his eyes. He's glad to meet one of his brothers though and he offers the other his hand for a shake.]
I am the Archangel Gabriel. And you are?
no subject
Not like he was outclassed or anything.]
Balthazar. pleasure, I'm sure.
[Pulling his hand back, the angel stepped around the other, looking at the wings. They seemed similar enough to his own, perhaps Gabriel could see a shadow of them behind him, folded neatly back.]
now I don't know about you but I'd like to get out of this ghastly heat. Drink?
no subject
He wonders briefly why he keeps them in such a state. Why not proudly wear them for all to see? Though if their wings are more vulnerable, it would make sense.]
That is the best offer I've had all day. Lead the way, brother.
no subject
Just up the street. Not a bad place, for Florida. [He gestures for the other to walk with him, hands slipping into his pockets, ignoring the occasional ImPort groupie as he'd come to call them.]
no subject
Ah, I wouldn't know. Florida doesn't have much left in the way of civilization where I'm from.
[It's and odd thought. Angels from other realities, other cosmos and worlds. Well, not entirely hard to believe considering he was thrown into one of those alternates. It'll take some adjusting but he can better wrap his mind around such an existence easier than a mortal might.
He walks along casually beside Balthazar, hands clasped behind his back.]
It's... strange, though don't get me wrong I'm delighted to meet another Angel, but I never thought there would be a different breed. Is our father still with you?
no subject
But did it ever?
[If he could, there were other places he'd much rather be. Parts of Europe, moving from city to city, spending some time in Paris, then Nice, towards Italy with a brief stint in one of the many Catholic Churches. Got to keep the clergy on their feet after all. but he made due. there were amusements here.]
Well, if it helps you're the third, maybe fourth variation upon the same theme. Strange but I wouldn't put it past Dad to try different variations.
[There's a soft sigh and Balthazar gives Gabriel a wry look.]
Left you too, hmm? We don't know when He left, but when He did... It didn't end well.
no subject
You're right, that sounds like something he'd do. Multiple prototypes to see which one gets it right. If he's gone I guess we failed.
[It was a sore spot, extremely sore, though he hid it well. There might be a tinge of some regret or pain in the half smile he gives the other. It's not false, that feeling, something he's certain the other may share if they had any sort of relationship with Him as he did. And he had every intention of finding a way to bring him back. Or he had. If he were trapped here now... well. He's gone this long dealing with an absent father. Even if being helpless to get home and finish what he started would drive him to the brink of insanity. It's tough pill to swallow but, there was a part of him that already accepted that he'd never see their father again. He fought anyway. Always had hope. Not much left now, was there?]
So, perhaps we'll both be needing that drink. I wouldn't mind hearing your version.
no subject
Maybe not failed. Maybe bored. Maybe testing us. I've heard all the theories.
I don't think there's any real way of knowing unless He returns.
[It was sore for the both of them, God's absence tearing his family apart and driving them to slaughter each other. Soldiers, good soldiers were sacrificed to bring the apocalypse to fruition, just to bring Him home. Some had thought maybe if they were good enough, obeyed every word He'd return. He didn't and there were so few of them left. It broke his heart, a sullen ache that vibrated through him.]
I'll trade you one for another.
[He leads Gabriel to a pub, a place made of polished wood and the like. Out of place maybe but it was one of the better drinking holes he'd found.]
What's your poison, then?
no subject
Sounds fair.
[He relaxes some as he moves through the bar, eyes sweeping over the decor and taking in the atmosphere. He liked Balthazar's taste, that's for sure. He moves to take a seat in a comfortable booth and turns to look up at the wall of bottles.]
It's all good in my opinion, I typically enjoy Scotch or Bourbon, a good glass of wine on occasion.
[He shrugs then.]
Surprise me.

Lucifer wanders through the festivities, more or less invisible to most of the people there. He has no interest in interacting with most of the humans or imPorts present, but it's useful to get a feel for the new arrivals- and there is one new arrival in particular.
He watches the angel before approaching. Blending in with the crowd and keeping his grace tightly gathered to him so as to not give himself away.
When the angel heads off to get some food, Lucifer follows along.] That was quite a display you put on back there.
no subject
Hm, there's something about this one he can't quite put his finger on. He won't let it show though as he studies Nick.]
Thank you. Anything to keep the fans happy I suppose.
[He motions to the seat opposite of him.] You may join me if you like.
[All the better to figure out who this is and why he can't shake that odd feeling.]
no subject
He sits himself down, studying the angel in the same way he is being studied. He saw those wings, earlier. Solid and made of matter- rather than just a manifestation of the spiritual. Even Lucifer could not make his wings appear like that.]
I take it you're not just one of the ordinary rank and file, what with all that power. [His words might indicate amazement, but Lucifer's tone certainly doesn't.]
no subject
Or perhaps just someone who thought they knew a thing or two about Angels from what he read in a book.]
How very astute of you. Yes, I am an Archangel. [A pause to see the response to that answer.]
And how is it you know of this? [Best not to assume anything.]
no subject
[And then, tilting his head as though he's thinking deeply about what he's just heard] Which archangel?
no subject
I am Gabriel.
[His name is said with a confident air and a smile.]
And you are?
no subject
He sits back, folding his arms.]
My name is Lucifer.
no subject
Though, for all he knew that was the name this man had chosen cause he thought it sounded like a cool, intimidating moniker to be known as. His real name could be Bob. But then, that only gave insight to what sort of abilities he might have. No doubt ones he wouldn't mind seeing at a later date. Strategically it wasn't sound to start a fight here and now with the Devil.]
Lucifer? [Spoken with a slight raise of his brows and a nod of acceptance, but there's a sort of tone as if to say "that's what you're going with?"]
A pleasure, I'm sure. [He smiles as his treat is delivered and he looks to Satan.]
Would you like something? My treat.
[It was hard to tell with Gabriel if his kindness was true or a facade to misdirect, and he preferred to keep it that way. He was serious at least, he would get Lucifer something if he were hungry or thirsty. Assuming the Devil ate at all, for necessity or, like him, out of simple enjoyment.]
no subject
Ah, no thank you. [He glances at the food.] One of the habits of physical existence I've yet to pick up.
[His gaze returns to this Gabriel, inspecting his form. He's fishing for information, anything he can get in regards to what exactly this creature is.] Not something you seem to be having problems with, showing off your wings earlier.
no subject
[He gives a half smile taking a mouthful of ice cream. He rolls it around on his tongue to melt it before swallowing to answer.]
Yes, I have been trying to enjoy this body to it's fullest, it was a gift after all. There aren't many of us that can take a physical form and appear human, the lowest ranks have to possess a human in order to have a form at all.
[His brow furrows once more as he studies Lucifer.]
I can't quite tell if that's your real body. I'd hate to think someone such as yourself would be forced to take a vessel.
[He shakes his head, though perhaps it's a veiled jab.]
no subject
An angel with wings that are visible on the physical plane, visible to humans, is new, and manages to catch Castiel's interest. He stays close by, not so much following the other angel as vaguely moving in the same direction.
It's at the malt shop that he decides to approach with all the subtlety of a brick. He doesn't engage people along the way, though Gabriel might hear the name 'Castiel' whispered by some teenage girl who appear to find him worthy of swooning when he walks past, coat brushing along one girl's arm, focus on Gabriel alone. He slides into the seat opposite him. ]
You're an angel.
no subject
Yes. I am. An Archangel to be precise.
[He studies the young man a moment, taking in his rather... normal, if over-dressed appearance. The familiar thrum of grace from the being tells him all he needs to know. An angel as well then, but not one of the same rank.]
And so are you, while we're being obvious.
