TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

And yet, it would be in your best interest, considering how they now own every aspect of your life. Respectable or not, they own you now, as they own all of us. You should listen to what they say- obeying it is another matter. At the very least, you would have known you have the power of super speed.

He stares down Inumuta for a moment, but then realizes he has a point. If he really can't get home (and it's looking more and more like he can't), he might as well learn more about why he's here.]

[He starts to slip the bag off his arm and unzip it to search through. He still has all his school books and his swim suit inside, in a bag so it won't get anything wet.]

How can this be true?

I'm assuming that through traveling dimensions, during whatever process that happens there, our genetics are altered to fit the physiology of this world better.

What does your file say?

[But they said this was Earth, how different could it be?

Instead of voicing this thought, as he's noticed Inumuta is a bit testy when it comes to some questions, he answers, blushing just a little from embarrassment.]

[It actually sounds beautiful, but he's still not sure how to react about the whole thing. For one, it's not even apparent he has his second power.]

They may potentially be not entirely corporeal. Some abilities require focus and understanding to access, others might trigger accidentally and unintentionally. Presume you have both.

[Jotting all these notes down... thank you for telling him your abilities, Rei.]

Well, I don't intend to use them! I'd prefer to stay normal, if it's all the same to everyone else.

It's highly suggested you at least learn how to use them. Lest you, a, use them at an inappropriate time by accident, and b, need to use them as a means of survival. You're new, so you aren't aware of it yet, but this place is not entirely forgiving of strangers. imPorts have been targeted in at least four attacks since January thus far. I would hate for you to be a casualty due to negligence and striving to be normal.

[Rei's righteous indignation falls a little at that, as fear starts to take its place. He knew that the soldiers had talked about being a hero, and protecting civilians, but no one had mentioned anyone actually getting attacked.]

What kind of attacks?

A train detonation- with both imPorts and civilians on it. Lethal robots. Kidnappings of imPorts. That's only a few.

[Literally all of that sounds terrible.]

Have they caught any of the people doing this!?

[Because it seems like a high priority case!]

Are you serious!? [Rei looks like he's going to have a heart attack.] They can't expect us to be heroes in these kinds of conditions, can they?

And yet, they do.

[Said in a more sardonic way. He knows it's bullshit. But he's telling the truth, without interjection.]

This is ridiculous. There's got to be a way to get home... There's no way this situation can be that hopeless.

The Porter is our only way back home, and it is currently possessed by the will of a vengeful Goddess. So no. There really isn't, for the time being.

[Excuse him if he looks pretty incredulous. The existence of "goddesses" are not something that can be proven with science so he doesn't believe in them.]

Are you sure that the scientists here simply don't understand how it works yet? [Or don't want anyone going home.]

The scientists knew how it worked before- and even used it without failure in operation, years ago. Once Lachesis possessed it, it went out of control, and brought people like us here.

So an angry god possessed the machine and now it brings random people here, and instead of actually trying to assist their unintentional abductees, they tell us to join their government or be left on the streets.
