He steps next to Kaz and points up at the mistletoe that they are both under.
"You know what that is? Some kind of Christmas plant?"

Kaz lifts a sharp brow and looks up. His lip curls. "Never heard of Christmas before coming here, but that is mistletoe."

[mofi]

"Never heard of Christmas," Murphy repeats, he sounds a little incredulous. "And," he drawls, "What's the deal with 'em?"

[roughworkdone]

"Well, if the tradition is at all familiar to the one I know, people are supposed to kiss under it."

He levels a sharp look.

"Don't get any ideas."

[mofi]

Murphy holds his hands up, palms out, in defense. "Wasn't planning on kissing you, dude.

It's a good time to leave now, right? Murphy tries, tried really hard in fact but, but...he can't seem to move out from under the mistletoe.

Murphy chuckles, mostly in disbelief. "Cool trick. Thought you said you didn't want a kiss?"

Somehow, Kaz Brekker's expression becomes more severe. "I'm not doing anything."

He manages to back up a step, but that's it. After that it's like hitting a wall, or like he's somehow tethered in place. He fixes the innocuous plant above them with a glare that might wither most things.

"Very funny," he growls. He hates this place.

[mofi]

"Wonderful." His jaw visibly tightens.

"I'm not doing it. My powers don't work like that." Murphy assumes anyway.

[roughworkdone]

"Great."

Kaz leans into his cane and looks around the room, but there's no indication that anything else will make this stop. Some people seem to be thoroughly embracing it. He doesn't like being trapped, and it's worse when he can't solve the mystery of it. Or when he doesn't like the answer.

[mofi]

His attention drifts, noticing the cane. Murphy purses his lips together, eyes all squinty. "Did you steal that from someone?"

[roughworkdone]

"No. I need it to walk."

Kaz has stolen many things, but the cane is not one of them. He paid good money for it, in fact, to be designed to his exact specifications, right down to the crow head handle.
