[ He laughs a little at that. ]

Yeah, well there's that, too.

[ He looks a little confused by the following statement. He'd have thought it seemed pretty obvious, considering he could've just as easily left it at the warning and moved on with the conversation, ignoring the mistletoe entirely.

So he shrugs and grins, though the expression does sort of border on amused incredulity. ]

I get to kiss a pretty girl.

[gigue]

[Okay so now she's second guessing every little thing. There's even a second where it looks like she wants to check over her shoulder, like maybe Allison has appeared. She's the pretty girl, obviously, Derek knows that.

But she's definitely not there, and looking would be even dumber than standing there as silent as her sister. A laugh finds its way out of Vanya's mouth, and she manages a shrug.]

If you say so, I guess. [Which is not at all like thank you, should she thank him, is that a better idea?]

[duelo]

[ Her response draws a huff of amusement from Derek as he takes a step forward, closer to her. ]

So is that a green light? Or will that make everything weird?

[ Okay, maybe he's a little curious what it might be like to kiss Vanya. Or...maybe it's been, like, three years since he's kissed anyone at all and he just wants a good excuse to break the dry streak. Derek can't really tell which it is, if he's honest, so maybe it's a little mixture of both? ]

[gigue]

[She thinks it will probably make everything weird, but she's also flustered. It was easier with Leonard, and that's not a thought she likes having: but there wasn't something there to mess up, or make awkward. She shrugs rather than saying so, though, because he's not the only one wondering what it's like.

And if this is the only time of year she can find out, then it would be dumb to say no, right?

Does that make her a bad person? Hell, is it any worse than what else she's done?

Vanya gives him a small smile.]

Green light.

[ Green light. He's still a little worried that it's going to make everything weird. What if there's a spark for him but not for her? Or what if there's a spark for her but not for him? What if neither of them feel anything and now they're just friends who've kissed and since they're both socially inept, it just makes things uncomfortable?

But then, with her small smile, he reminds himself that nothing could be more uncomfortable than the first time he saw her after the ghost train. It's that thought that makes him smile back and step closer still, lifting a hand to hold the side of her face and dipping his head so that he can reach to press his lips to hers.

Derek doesn't try to push anything, but his reflexive move isn't just to mash his lips against someone else's when he's kissing them; he catches her bottom lip between his and the tip his nose brushes against the side of hers. He pauses there, lingering for a few seconds before drawing back again, not wanting to make things awkward by deepening something that doesn't need it or holding a few seconds too long for something a little more chaste.

When he does pull back, he stays close for a moment, looking down at her like he's not really sure how that felt...he's not really sure how that felt. It definitely didn't feel bad, he knows that much, at least. Derek wets his lips and then smiles a little, ducking his head—in a way that's more Vanya than Derek—for a second before looking back at her. ]

Better than a stranger, at least? I hope?

[gigue]

[She expected a peck. The kind of first kisses that kids have, the kind of unsure, unexpected kiss that you don't have to think too hard about; you probably will, but you don't have to. This isn't a peck, and it's not a lead up to something else which definitely would have been weird at this point but it's also--

It's something, it's very definitely something and Vanya does not know what to make of this kind of something. The first time she kissed Leonard was celebratory, after she got the solo - okay, no, she does not want to wander down that route - and before that...shit, before that she can't remember the last time she even dated anyone.

When he pulls back, she drops back down from her toes and tells herself not to look at him too long, too hard, don't let him think she's going to make it weird. She's not. It's fine. It's fine. But when he ducks his head, she does stare, because she can count on one hand how often she's seen him do that. Probably doesn't even need to use all her fingers to do it.

At least she manages a laugh.]

Definitely less uncomfortable than a stranger.

[ Okay, this isn't disastrous. This is fine and nothing's weird and she's laughing which isn't great but also isn't a bad reaction, so he'll take it. And now he knows what it's like to kiss Vanya Hargreeves, so...there's that.

Derek laughs with her and takes a step back to give her back her personal space. ]

Well, good, since the whole idea was to prevent you from having to endure a stranger.

[ ...and now he's not actually sure where to go with this... Honestly, if she were someone else, he probably would've gone in for another by now if she was giving any sort of indication that that'd be all right, but it's Vanya, so that would make it weird. ]

Wanna get a drink?

[A drink is possibly the least weird thing she can think of right now, and with space between them again she steps out from under the mistletoe. She's going to be looking up a lot more than usual tonight.]
