TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[There's a girl wandering around the city streets of Heropa today. A girl who looks quite out of place. She wears rather a lot of heavy-looking elaborate jewellery on her person, with many layers of clothes that are richly hand-embroidered with patterns all over. She carries a wooden bow in one hand-- last thing she remembers before she woke up here, she was out hunting on the plains.

Pariya is not only surprised by Heropa. She is positively gawking at it. She doesn't stay still long enough for any of the locals to approach her.]

Hey! Hey, it's flying! [She says, pointing at a local speeding by on a passing hover-board.]

HELLO YOU HAVE EXCELLENT TASTE

[hypnotherapy]

That's a hoverboard. It flies.

[ This guy is just...tall. And dressed very simply, compared to the girl's patterned clothing.

He stares at her ornate, layered clothing and then up at the annoyingly bright Florida sun. ]

Your clothing. Isn't it too warm for this weather? [ His sentences are clipped and awkwardly precise. ]

Huh? [She's used to people complimenting her clothes. Saying how nice they are. Didn't Amira say so? Who's this guy? She's been in hotter than this. Hmph. Something about his manner immediately puts her on the defensive. Doesn't he just look like the sort of guy who thinks he knows everything?? Suddenly she feels small. Small and annoyed.]

Isn't yours too plain?

[It's not like she hasn't seen plain clothes before-- she's seen the way Mr. Smith dresses, after all. She just feels suddenly ornery.]

[ He looks at his coat, picking at it. Another weird human thing he has to get used to: clothes. Changing them. That kind of thing. He looked the same as a navi; that had been all. ]

Plain...?

They are plain. Yes. [ He doesn't argue. ] Is this a bad thing?

[ Yeah, he...he literally doesn't know. Of course he knows how clothes would say something about other people, but technically he's never worn them in his life. He doesn't think about this kind of thing. ]

[This idiot... why doesn't he know something so simple and obvious?

Then again, many people are dressed like him, here. Like Mr. Smith. Maybe he's the one who's normal, and she's the one who's weird???]

Of course it's bad.

Ah. [ Maybe he should look into getting some nicer clothes or something...not that he can really tell what's nicer or what would look good on him. ] I'll keep that in mind.

That must mean your clothes are very good then. By those standards. [ He does find her clothes interesting. But he's almost certain that humans suffer from heatstroke! He's kind of worried. ]

...Your bow. Are you a hunter?

Ah... well. I guess they're nicer than average, aren't they...

[What is she saying?!?>!?!]

And I'm not skilled enough with a bow to be considered anything like that...

I was just practicing.

[As soon as Pariya points that out, there's the sound of bare feet hitting the pavement, a figure running out of the mess of people walking by in order to stand next to her, one hand on his hip and the other up and shading his eyes from the sun as they both peer up at the hover-boards above them.]

Aaaaaa? It really is!

[This newcomer is dressed... sort of simply? His midrif is bare and he has no shoes but really doesn't seem bothered by it. The most decorative things on him are the shining gold bangles he wears from wrists to elbows as well as the large ruby sitting in the gold around his neck.]

It's definitely weird, right? I'm not the weird one here for being surprised, right?!

Nah, nah, s'not powered with magoi either. [The boy shakes his head, looking almost too excited by the sight of all the cars and hover things around them.]

Oi, oooiiii~ [He has one hand curled up around his mouth, calling up to one of the people sailing around ten feet up. Unsurprisingly, none of them pay attention.] Tch.

Hey, princess. [Finally, he turns to Pariya, pointing up at the people zooming around above them.] Wanna get closer?

[pariya]

[She looks at him uncertainly when he calls her "princess".]

Uh... do you mean me...?

[taintedrukh]

Aaaaaa, don't tell me you're not. [He turns, frowning and crossing his arms.] Noble, then? Or did you steal those jewels?

[After all, not just anyone goes around decked up like that, whether in this world or the one Judar's from]

Huh?! I'm no thief!

Th-This is a normal level of jewellery, isn't it?!

[Then she looks around and notices everyone... else...]

[ This girl is really decked out. It reminds her a little of the fancy salwars her mother and cousins like to wear. This girl has way more bling though. Kamala was surprised she's not feeling stuffy in it ]

[Finally, someone who looks as if she might come from a world that's similar to his own, if not exactly. Vasilis has had some time to take in the miracles of this place, though he hasn't fully adjusted - and, while he isn't scared, it certainly would be nice to speak with someone experiencing the same wonder.

He hasn't bothered to change into something more appropriate to the era. (Why would he? The fashion in this place is downright ugly.) Instead, he's still wearing his layers of sunset-colored silk robes, and the heat doesn't appear to bother him in the slightest. It's the one thing that's familiar. He's content to go on looking overdressed for this occasion and garnering stares from the locals.

He comes to a halt beside the girl, hands folded behind his back.]

My mother always taught me not to trust anything that could fly without wings.

[She blinks at him, clearly surprised-- who is this man? Why is he standing so close?

But his manner and clothing are more familiar than anyone or anything else here. So after a moment's consideration, she speaks.]

Mine used to say something similar... but...

All the same... I really wanna ride it.

It looks fun.

[It looks like a deathtrap. It looks like a cursed object flying at high speed through the air with nothing but witchcraft to control it.]

Should I pick you up and toss you onto it?

[He's joking, though he could easily do it. He stands at seven feet tall and could throw a small girl like her quite a ways.]

[She goes a distinct shade of pink.]

What? Wh-Who would want to do something so childish!

[She really wants to do it.]

Is it childish? I thought it adventurous, myself. You might break a few bones in the process. Think of the tales you'll have to tell from this day onward.
