TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ Lookit this little monster with his gaggle of crooked teeth. He makes a vaguely annoyed sound around her fingers. ]

-- Hey!

Oh! [she withdraws her hand, grinning sheepishly and shrugging her shoulders] Sorry. Your teeth are adorable. [her feathery hair flares open slightly in her excitement]

[ Blech. He spits out a feather. ]

And you're - uh - a hummingbird mutant with a tooth fetish?

[she hovers back then forward again, tilting her head slightly as if pondering the statement.]

Of course not. I'm the tooth fairy.

... The mutant theory was more plausible.

[She lets out a soft gasp and covers her mouth. Disbelief and a little bit of horror coloring her features]

You don't believe in me? What about Santa Claus? A-and the Easter Bunny?

[ Sorry, Toothiana. You're talking to the most skeptical sassmaster in San Fransokyo. ]

Uh, no? Maybe Santa when I was like five. And Easter never, much less the bunny.

[oh this is terrible. she flutters about. A little flustered]

That's awful. Are all the children here like this?

First of all, I'm a teenager. Second of all ... I dunno, maybe? I don't hang out with kids who're still young enough for that.

[ He feels a little bad now seeing how flustered she is. ]

Nonsense. You're still old enough to believe. [a little softer:] Even the adults believed in us. I guess things really are different here.

[microbrobotics]

... Yeahhhh, I think so. I mean - I believe you're real where you come from, if that helps? But not here. Or home.

How strange. Who protects you- the children?

[she seems more confused than flustered right now at least]

[microbrobotics]

Teenager. And I don't know, nobody? Themselves?

[exchangesfor]

[Don't be silly. You are a child, Hiro. That said, she's hovering a little too close to peer at his face. Earnest worry showing in her eyes]

No one? Oh, you poor thing. [she notices the gap in his tooth this time and a horrible thought makes her gasp in shock] Wait- that means- your tooth. It- no one kept it for you? Oh, this is terrible!

I had my brother and my aunt. ... Pretty sure they didn't keep my baby teeth, though. Who even does that?

[Horror. Absolute horror. How could anyone just- just throw away teeth?!]

Oh my gosh. They're the most important- I- I'm sorry. I shouldn't be- You shouldn't be worried about this. [She flutters a little ways off so she could be quietly horrified. Her head bowed and a hand over her lips]

[microbrobotics]

[ THIS CONVERSATION IS WEIRD. ... that's roughly Hiro's train of thought right now. At least she doesn't seem to be hostile or anything, so he's willing to cut her some slack. ]

It's fine? Why are they so important anyway?

[Well, her world view is being turned upside down so it's a little daunting to deal with. She's silent for a few seconds but she turns to him again, looking less horrified.]

That's because... [she lowers her voice slightly and leans in closer] Don't go telling everyone, okay? [Then she leans back with a soft smile] Each tooth holds an important memory. As a child grows up, it's my job to make sure they don't forget what's important to them.

[microbrobotics]

[ His eyes widen a bit. ]

Seriously?

[she nods twice]

Yes. That's why it's so important to keep the teeth safe.

[microbrobotics]

... How would teeth remember that anyway? Is it magic or something?

They just do. Have been for thousands of years.

That's ... weird, but okay. Your world already sounds strange.

[hm. She has to think about it for a moment though she doesn't quite see it]

I guess it does sound strange. I've been doing this for so long it just feels natural.
