TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Florida sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[She gives him a look that plainly says, 'you're a fucking weirdo', but somewhere in there he can find an attempt to think of the name and see if it rings any bells, too. She may not be nice, but she can be minimally helpful.

I'm Alan Wake. I'm not usually like this. A lot of things have happened. I didn't think this was real.

[He still needs to find his wife but if he's free from the dark, he can go anywhere he wants]

Yeah, sorry - not a therapist, not interested.

[So she'd just like to go back to her cigarette and not being grabbed by strangers.]

This is fucking real, all right.

[he holds his hands up again, showing her that he's not about to touch]

It's a nice word for 'stupidity'.

[Normally he'd be mad as hell over that but right now he's just too relieved to care]

Yeah, sure. Do you know where we are? I wasn't paying attention when they dropped me off.

[she looks up, slipping her sunglasses on with a grimace.] I know I do.

[Hey, he's been in the dark for a long time okay]

[She hangs out in the dark a lot herself. Mostly because that's where the demon-gods hide. That's where the monsters lurk. There's a reason the saying goes 'things that go bump in the night'.]

What, like this is a fucking vacation?

Exactly like a vacation.

[he's never been this ecstatic about a vacation for years]

[But sometimes Jewell thinks it might be okay to not be a jerk all the time.]

[Alan's dealt with worse at this point. He holds out his hand to her]

I said it already but I'm Alan.

[paraesthesia]

[Didn't they just get over the touching part? But fine - she rolls her eyes and offers a poor excuse for a handshake.]

So, Alan. I take it you're not just looking for a nice place to swim.
