QUIT RUNNING IN THE HOUSE

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

    02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

    03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

    04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ The large dog comes trotting up from the shore with a ball Kate had thrown earlier in her mouth. She sets it down at Kate's feet and waits patiently for her to toss it again. She bends over, picks up the ball, and then throws it a good distance with the dog tearing off after it. ]

I wonder what your bad days are like.

[ She looks at him again. ]

The ocean's the largest body of water on the planet.

[ Levi's eyes follow the dog kick up wet grass and dirt with saliva flying out of its mouth, bounding off with the bliss it found in idiocy. All of this open space and people with shit eating grins - it was all a completely alien experience. ]

Being the first person to see this in over a hundred years. [ Slowly blinking, his flat grey eyes give some hint to his real age when he looks back at her. ] I suppose I should be jumping for joy right about now.

[ It comes as a brief surprise. He certainly doesn't look anywhere close to her age, but it must be his height throwing her off. Either that, or somehow she's allowed her skills to get rusty.

His comment, however, piques her interest. She glances from the shoreline and back to Levi, canting her head curiously. ]

Might be shock.

[ It hits everyone differently. ]

It isn't as if I don't know whether to shit or go blind.

[ Levi flatly defended that it wasn't shock keeping him there in his own, wholly Levi way of things. A white handkerchief comes out of some pocket lining the inside of his jacket. He wipes down the pier guardrail covered in dried bird shit and day old spilled cola before he touches it, tossing the handkerchief. ]

Everyone here seems used to it.

[ He certainly has a talent for words. If she didn't feel pity for him, she might have actually snorted in amusement at how he bluntly described his own confusion about all he's witnessed. Like most Bats, she's naturally curious, but she refrains from bombarding him with too many questions. It's neither the time nor place for it. ]

This is the way their world is. [ And hers save the retro-tech. ] I take it you're from a landlocked country.

[ Levi wanted to be happier about this; he wanted to just jump for joy over an actual fuckton of water. Hard is was to see this as significant, here it felt trivial. The norm. This was all par for the course for these people, and how could know this was an ocean that could be found in his world? ]

It's probably full of shit. [ There. Now he could distance himself from the topic. ]

Maybe. [ Not the first time it dawned on him they didn't even know the exact geography of their own country. ] It would be more accurate to say we were locked in.

[ Either she can pick a fight and waste her breath and time, or she could just let him be. She'll give him the benefit of the doubt this one time, as she suspects it's shock he's trying his damnedest not to give into.

She can hear children laughing in the distance, parents playing with them in the water, couples chasing each other and trying small pails of salt water onto themselves, other dogs running back and forth after toys their owners have thrown.

Schnitzel returns once more with the ball, her shaggy tail swishing back and forth merrily as she takes her faithful place beside Kate. ]

Locked in? [ She repeats. Prisoners? He doesn't look like one and there's no indication he's been treated as such judging from his clothes, skin and hair. ] You wouldn't be the first to mistake the ocean for something else, I imagine.
