MOM CAN YOU DROP ME OFF? (IN RUSSIA?)

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place! If you'd like, take a look at our ATP post!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at someone else's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. The city of Heropa is what one might expect from a small, bright and cheery place. The locals are friendly enough and local shop owners might offer a free drink to welcome you to their fair city. Some of the locals might thank you for always lending your service to the nation and others might not say anything. In fact, some people might back away from any imPort who quite obviously looks like they aren't from around the neighborhood. Once in a while there's a look of disdain on someone's face and hushed voices. A snippy voice wonders aloud: "My taxes are going to their parties and other expenses? When are they going to do something for us for a change? Why if they weren't around, I bet the Soviets--" These naysayers may, however, find themselves hushed with a judgmental: "You couldn't do what they do even if you had powers. They don't have to help us, you know!"
02. De Chima, Virginia, is a large city with a healthy economy, and though it's quieter, there are just as many citizens awed at your presence. Heavy winds have people grasping at their newspapers and constantly brushing hair out of their faces, but that doesn't distract them from crowding you in excitement if you're obviously from a different time or world, or just let it slip that you're a newcomer. Children and young teenagers are especially likely to ask for an autograph and a photo.
Some locals seem less enthused to see you. They never make an approach, but they can be overheard scoffing and muttering something about cameras and an incident involving gas. "Biological warfare... we sure some of them haven't defected?"
03. Maurtia Falls, Pennsylvania, is normally known for being a little more on the apathetic side, but there's been tension in the atmosphere lately, contrasted by headlines broadcasting petty, unimportant local news and no worldly news.
People are not as friendly in this city and go out of their way to avoid walking down the same sidewalk as the more obvious looking imPorts pass through. Local cops say nothing, but they scowl at those imPorts and mutter under their breaths resentfully about "vigilantes". However, not all locals turn the other way seeing imPorts; some of them will offer a polite enough smile and thank them for their hard work. They don't stop to clarify what they mean, though.
04. Nonah, North Carolina, is the liveliest of all cities. It's loud, busy and there's some kind of energy in the air that gets everyone buzzing with excitement. Anyone who they come to determine an imPort is bombarded with all sorts of offers; job offers, advertising gigs, spokesperson for advocating children stay in school, etc. Anything and everything! You name it. Shops offer discounts for food and clothing, whatever they need. Advertisements are abound for imPorts to make appearances at various, televised celebrations, luring them in with promises of free food, merchandise, and payment. ImPort action figures and merchandise are on sale now, and every corner's coffee shop is still serving festive peppermint goods of every shape and form.

Which makes it important to figure out just what Kudo knows. He doesn't sigh, but the shift from cheerful best friend to detective is abrupt.
Heiji steeples his fingers, leaning forward on the table. "Before I go into that, what do ya remember before wakin' up in Florida?"

"I just got off the Belltree Express. Why?"
no subject
"Because yer not gonna believe a word of what I tell ya without ignorin' reality for a bit."

Sure, eighteen doesn't actually feel any different from seventeen, and it hasn't been enough time to mark any physical differences that Kudo can see (except possibly a note of seriousness Heiji doesn't usually carry), but it's there nonetheless.
"Maybe it's because ya trust me, and know I wouldn't lie to ya about somethin' that would otherwise be so obviously stupid."
There's a pause.
"Or that I can make swords, take yer pick."

And perhaps a small amount of concern for Hattori's sanity.
"Since when have you ever advised abandoning logic? What happened here?"
He frowns.
"As for the rest, I can think of several different explanations for why I could have suddenly arrived in America. Of course you're older than the last time we've met. It has been a while."
Such a deadpan look.
"And you're so sure that I trust you." Which Conan did, of course. But he absolutely refused t admit it. Or the fact that the only reason he was willing to consider taking the whole situation at face value at all was because it was Hattori asking.
"Just what do you mean by swords?" He wasn't sure that he wanted to know.

"It's like we stepped into a movie." How is that supposed to help, Heiji!?
His expression turns serious, however, as he crosses his arms. Conan will only accept an explanation that makes sense; something that Heiji has to show he takes absolutely seriously. Facts, and nothing more.
He starts with the history of this world and imports as he's researched it, offering dates and important events that Conan can easily look up to confirm that explain just how different this place is. The soon to not be Cold War, the technical advancements, dipping only a little into the scientific theory that supports the possibility of the porter.
Nanites are easy enough to explain. Heiji pushes up his sleeve to show Conan the light Registered tattoo on his wrist. There's patterning visible on his arm as well, reminiscent of leopard spots that blend seamlessly with his skin. Smaller clusters of which are present on the back of his neck and temples.
He doesn't say the word superpowers. Going into that in depth right now would probably just as solidly convince Conan that Heiji's giving him shit, which...valid concern. Heiji didn't want to believe any of this either, and wouldn't have if he didn't have to live with the reality every day since he arrived.
It's not as fun a topic as it otherwise could have been. The war pending over all of their heads, the implications that they're nothing more than weapons. It pisses him off. There's a gravity to his voice that will tell Conan just how seriously Heiji is taking this.
He wishes he could have had a little fun with it.

He couldn't remember the last time that Hattori had gone so long without making any teasing comments. Just that was enough to impress on him that this was all real. Even if some of it seemed difficult to believe.

"Imports are a pretty hot commodity, I guess, an' no wonder." He pulls his nightstick from his belt, holding it sideways between the two of them. At first nothing seems to be happening, but then the weapon is thinning out, sharpening, until a moment later Heiji is holding a tanto. "Like I said, it's like we stepped into a movie."
no subject
"If it was anyone other than you telling me this...."
But it was. And for all of Hattori's jokes, Conan always knew when he was being serious.
And then he just has to stop and stare.
"What?" He might be sputtering a little bit. "How did that happen?"

"Did you ever figure out how?"

That's honest sadness right there. He misses Honey. She was brilliant.
"I figured out how to do this, at least. Started when I was in danger, so part of it's instinct. Lot've people come in with new skills that seem t'suit em. It's not the only thing I can do, either. M'bettin you've got a thing or two up yer sleeve as well. It'd be in that folder they gave ya. Beyond that..."
He shrugs a shoulder. If it were any other skill that he cultivated himself, he'd be bragging about it, but for all he's gotten used to it? 'Superpowers' will never be normal.
"There's been bigger things t'worry about."
