MOM CAN YOU DROP ME OFF? (IN RUSSIA?)

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place! If you'd like, take a look at our ATP post!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at someone else's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. The city of Heropa is what one might expect from a small, bright and cheery place. The locals are friendly enough and local shop owners might offer a free drink to welcome you to their fair city. Some of the locals might thank you for always lending your service to the nation and others might not say anything. In fact, some people might back away from any imPort who quite obviously looks like they aren't from around the neighborhood. Once in a while there's a look of disdain on someone's face and hushed voices. A snippy voice wonders aloud: "My taxes are going to their parties and other expenses? When are they going to do something for us for a change? Why if they weren't around, I bet the Soviets--" These naysayers may, however, find themselves hushed with a judgmental: "You couldn't do what they do even if you had powers. They don't have to help us, you know!"

    02. De Chima, Virginia, is a large city with a healthy economy, and though it's quieter, there are just as many citizens awed at your presence. Heavy winds have people grasping at their newspapers and constantly brushing hair out of their faces, but that doesn't distract them from crowding you in excitement if you're obviously from a different time or world, or just let it slip that you're a newcomer. Children and young teenagers are especially likely to ask for an autograph and a photo.

Some locals seem less enthused to see you. They never make an approach, but they can be overheard scoffing and muttering something about cameras and an incident involving gas. "Biological warfare... we sure some of them haven't defected?"

    03. Maurtia Falls, Pennsylvania, is normally known for being a little more on the apathetic side, but there's been tension in the atmosphere lately, contrasted by headlines broadcasting petty, unimportant local news and no worldly news.

People are not as friendly in this city and go out of their way to avoid walking down the same sidewalk as the more obvious looking imPorts pass through. Local cops say nothing, but they scowl at those imPorts and mutter under their breaths resentfully about "vigilantes". However, not all locals turn the other way seeing imPorts; some of them will offer a polite enough smile and thank them for their hard work. They don't stop to clarify what they mean, though.

    04. Nonah, North Carolina, is the liveliest of all cities. It's loud, busy and there's some kind of energy in the air that gets everyone buzzing with excitement. Anyone who they come to determine an imPort is bombarded with all sorts of offers; job offers, advertising gigs, spokesperson for advocating children stay in school, etc. Anything and everything! You name it. Shops offer discounts for food and clothing, whatever they need. Advertisements are abound for imPorts to make appearances at various, televised celebrations, luring them in with promises of free food, merchandise, and payment. ImPort action figures and merchandise are on sale now, and every corner's coffee shop is still serving festive peppermint goods of every shape and form.

[Don't look now, but one of the people the action figures is based on is heading out of a nearby bookshop. Of course, she's wearing a sweater instead of armor, and a bag of books instead of sword and bells, but the unnaturally pale skin and bobbed hair are hard to miss... especially when she almost collides with him.]

Oh! Not at all, I'm sorry about that.

W-Whoa!

[He just about falls over, but luckily manages to stay upright. The similarity between the girl and the doll is definitely hard to miss - but it's rude to criticize someone you just met.]

No, it's alright. I only just arrived here, so I'm still getting my bearings.

Ah. Well, people here in Nonah are... enthusiastic about imPorts. [Something about the way Sabriel says that doesn't sound entirely positive.]

I mean, it's good that people don't hate us, and it's our duty to help out, but- if you're ever mentioned in the news, it takes a while for them to stop bothering you.

Really?

[To be honest, that doesn't sound all that different from how things work in his own world. Judging by her reaction, that sort of widespread public image may not be commonplace where she's from.]

I...think I know what you mean. I know that some S-Class or A-class heroes always seem to be getting interviewed on TV.

S-Class?

[It's clear from her expression that Sabriel has no idea what he means.]

You mean your world has people like imPorts in it?

A-Ah! I'm still trying to grasp that there aren't any hero rankings here. It's strange when it's been a part of your life for so long.

I supose it's similar to having imPorts, but everyone comes from the same world. We use a system to rank heroes based on their ability to protect the people and handle crises. When you get to the top of one rank, you have the option to move up to the next.

But doesn't that depend on the situation? Great physical strength might be useful for fighting other imPorts, or monsters, but it's not much use if someone's spreading a poison or disease around- then you'd need a healer. If someoen's being controlled by someone else's abilities, you'd need people who can restrain them or disrupt the control- or are higher ranked heroes the ones with the most versatile skills?

...no, you're right.

[He's thought about it before, but it's interesting to get an outside perspective.]

Most of the threats we face in my world happen to be from monsters. We have a ranking system for those crises as well. Usually, if any of those things were to happen, it would be because of a monster...but if it was because of something else? Even if they couldn't fight the the dangers head-on, there would still be heroes working to protect the people, no matter what!

Still, they aren't called S-Class heroes for nothing. Some of the things they accomplish together...a Class-C hero could only dream of it.

Ah. Well, here, the nature of threats tend to be more varied- we have monsters sometimes, but also criminals that need to be captured, not killed, and various disasters that require different skills.

Although I've found that other imPorts- and people from this world- are the foes we're most often called on to fight.
