MOM CAN YOU DROP ME OFF? (IN RUSSIA?)

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place! If you'd like, take a look at our ATP post!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at someone else's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. The city of Heropa is what one might expect from a small, bright and cheery place. The locals are friendly enough and local shop owners might offer a free drink to welcome you to their fair city. Some of the locals might thank you for always lending your service to the nation and others might not say anything. In fact, some people might back away from any imPort who quite obviously looks like they aren't from around the neighborhood. Once in a while there's a look of disdain on someone's face and hushed voices. A snippy voice wonders aloud: "My taxes are going to their parties and other expenses? When are they going to do something for us for a change? Why if they weren't around, I bet the Soviets--" These naysayers may, however, find themselves hushed with a judgmental: "You couldn't do what they do even if you had powers. They don't have to help us, you know!"

    02. De Chima, Virginia, is a large city with a healthy economy, and though it's quieter, there are just as many citizens awed at your presence. Heavy winds have people grasping at their newspapers and constantly brushing hair out of their faces, but that doesn't distract them from crowding you in excitement if you're obviously from a different time or world, or just let it slip that you're a newcomer. Children and young teenagers are especially likely to ask for an autograph and a photo.

Some locals seem less enthused to see you. They never make an approach, but they can be overheard scoffing and muttering something about cameras and an incident involving gas. "Biological warfare... we sure some of them haven't defected?"

    03. Maurtia Falls, Pennsylvania, is normally known for being a little more on the apathetic side, but there's been tension in the atmosphere lately, contrasted by headlines broadcasting petty, unimportant local news and no worldly news.

People are not as friendly in this city and go out of their way to avoid walking down the same sidewalk as the more obvious looking imPorts pass through. Local cops say nothing, but they scowl at those imPorts and mutter under their breaths resentfully about "vigilantes". However, not all locals turn the other way seeing imPorts; some of them will offer a polite enough smile and thank them for their hard work. They don't stop to clarify what they mean, though.

    04. Nonah, North Carolina, is the liveliest of all cities. It's loud, busy and there's some kind of energy in the air that gets everyone buzzing with excitement. Anyone who they come to determine an imPort is bombarded with all sorts of offers; job offers, advertising gigs, spokesperson for advocating children stay in school, etc. Anything and everything! You name it. Shops offer discounts for food and clothing, whatever they need. Advertisements are abound for imPorts to make appearances at various, televised celebrations, luring them in with promises of free food, merchandise, and payment. ImPort action figures and merchandise are on sale now, and every corner's coffee shop is still serving festive peppermint goods of every shape and form.

Don't let him find Malachite.

[surprise surprise, the attempt at derailing completely works! doubly so because Lapis knows that time is frozen so long as they remain in this universe - which means when she returns, all she has to look forward to is an eternal battle at the bottom of the ocean.

there was no way she was going to let Steven get anywhere near her fusion. if that meant showing a little vulnerability by making a request (demand) of a Crystal Gem, so be it. she'd do whatever she had to.]

I can handle things by myself. Just - keep him away!

[PHEW. Amethyst lets herself relax, just a little, loosening up. She starts to straighten up the mess of papers in her arms to get a better grip on them, leaning against a wall.]

I... think he kinda knows that now. We all do.

[There's some quiet resignation in her voice. Sure, Malachite's a problem, a time bomb that the Crystal Gems are gonna have to handle one day, but hopefully with Steven far away. Safe from getting hurt by the giant fusion, but also safe from seeing whatever the end of that battle would be. But...]

You know how he is, though. None of us can stop him from doing whatever once he's decided on it. We're, like, historically bad at that. You included, Lazuli.

Hey, who knows? With you here, out and about, maybe he'll show up. I mean, it couldn't have just been me sucked through that thing, and he's always getting into trouble.

[she frowns at that accusation, but Lapis can't deny it. she'd risked betraying her entire planet just to keep him away from their ship when it landed, and what had happened? they'd touched down and Steven had been front and center, pulling Jasper's attention inextricably towards him.

but that little suggestion, meant to be positive, is the first thing that gets Lapis to tear her far too intense stare away from the other gem and look off into nothing. there's a soft change in angle to the hitch of her shoulders that makes them seem more defensive than barely restrained aggression.]

...it doesn't work like that. People don't just come through because you want them.

[there's absolutely no way that she's going to admit this to a Crystal Gem, but Lapis knows her fortunes quite well at this point. she doesn't need a precognitive ability to know that she's never going to be lucky enough to see Steven tumbling through that stupid porter. it would be too much of a gift.]

So, what, you're some kinda expert on this thing?

[It's not meant to sound snarky - she's actually interested - but the great thing about Amethyst is that most things that come out of her mouth end up sounding even a little sarcastic. Even if she is right, it's not like Garnet and Pearl would just leave her here.

Alone.

She'd get into way too much trouble. So, yeah, she's pretty convinced someone else will show up. Probably with Steven, too, because of course he'd wanna tag along to rescue Amethyst. Be a big hero. He'd love that. But... when? If this isn't even their earth, then how would they know where to look? She doubts any of the warps lead here.]

... How long have you been here?
oceanthief: (one day i'll see you around)

[personal profile] oceanthief 2016-01-24 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not long.

[that's not an answer, but Lapis doesn't see any benefit to giving details. how funny - for all her disdain for the earth, she was more open when speaking with humans than her own kind. it's the sort of irony that wouldn't sit well with her if she were aware.

her gaze turns back to Amethyst, and she offers the other gem a dainty little shrug. anyone else she asks this question of will make it sound monumental, but the truth is-]

No one's been here for more than three years.

[that's a sneeze to a gem. she still can't understand why people get worked up about it.]

[Sure, Amethyst isn't good at math but that can't be right... Frowning, she looks down and counts on her fingers. About a month since Peridot started living with them...]

Uhhh, what's up with that? It's only been, like, six months since you and Jasper fused.
oceanthief: (but one day i'll make you proud)

[personal profile] oceanthief 2016-01-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[she shakes her head again, expression faintly impatient now. it's unfair to expect Amethyst to know all this, having just arrived, but it's not like Lapis has ever been kind to the Crystal Gems.]

Time doesn't move the same here. [for example-] I'd only just fused when I got taken.

[Well, that's... something. Some kinda relief. Humans are weird. Sure, three years is nothing to a gem, but to a human, that's a long time. Steven could have grown up. And who knows about Greg or Vidalia. She looked so old the last time they hung out. On the other hand... Three years.

Here.

Alone.

... Maybe she could sleep that long?]

Thaaaat's pretty weird, but okay.

[She'll leave it at that, and, you know, not mention the part where Lapis getting out of that shipwreck ASAP is probably the best thing that could've happened to her, considering how well Malachite's doing now.]

So... what've you been up to?
oceanthief: (when i leave it all behind)

[personal profile] oceanthief 2016-01-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[it is pretty weird. but it also lends credence to Lapis' theory that the humans of this world couldn't have possibly built the Porter - there was just no way they were capable of something advanced enough to distort space and time. not even Homeworld had managed that...thank god.]

Why do you need to know?

[oh, and they'd almost been having something vaguely approaching a civil conversation. but there she goes again, shutting down with a wary glare. there was no way she was just going to give away important locations and people to her without a damn good reason.]
