MOM CAN YOU DROP ME OFF? (IN RUSSIA?)

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place! If you'd like, take a look at our ATP post!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at someone else's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. The city of Heropa is what one might expect from a small, bright and cheery place. The locals are friendly enough and local shop owners might offer a free drink to welcome you to their fair city. Some of the locals might thank you for always lending your service to the nation and others might not say anything. In fact, some people might back away from any imPort who quite obviously looks like they aren't from around the neighborhood. Once in a while there's a look of disdain on someone's face and hushed voices. A snippy voice wonders aloud: "My taxes are going to their parties and other expenses? When are they going to do something for us for a change? Why if they weren't around, I bet the Soviets--" These naysayers may, however, find themselves hushed with a judgmental: "You couldn't do what they do even if you had powers. They don't have to help us, you know!"

    02. De Chima, Virginia, is a large city with a healthy economy, and though it's quieter, there are just as many citizens awed at your presence. Heavy winds have people grasping at their newspapers and constantly brushing hair out of their faces, but that doesn't distract them from crowding you in excitement if you're obviously from a different time or world, or just let it slip that you're a newcomer. Children and young teenagers are especially likely to ask for an autograph and a photo.

Some locals seem less enthused to see you. They never make an approach, but they can be overheard scoffing and muttering something about cameras and an incident involving gas. "Biological warfare... we sure some of them haven't defected?"

    03. Maurtia Falls, Pennsylvania, is normally known for being a little more on the apathetic side, but there's been tension in the atmosphere lately, contrasted by headlines broadcasting petty, unimportant local news and no worldly news.

People are not as friendly in this city and go out of their way to avoid walking down the same sidewalk as the more obvious looking imPorts pass through. Local cops say nothing, but they scowl at those imPorts and mutter under their breaths resentfully about "vigilantes". However, not all locals turn the other way seeing imPorts; some of them will offer a polite enough smile and thank them for their hard work. They don't stop to clarify what they mean, though.

    04. Nonah, North Carolina, is the liveliest of all cities. It's loud, busy and there's some kind of energy in the air that gets everyone buzzing with excitement. Anyone who they come to determine an imPort is bombarded with all sorts of offers; job offers, advertising gigs, spokesperson for advocating children stay in school, etc. Anything and everything! You name it. Shops offer discounts for food and clothing, whatever they need. Advertisements are abound for imPorts to make appearances at various, televised celebrations, luring them in with promises of free food, merchandise, and payment. ImPort action figures and merchandise are on sale now, and every corner's coffee shop is still serving festive peppermint goods of every shape and form.

[kavinsky is being shitty to the civilians, it's true. it's kind of a chronic condition for him, and generally at the expense of other people. that's probably all bad enough, but when blue lets go of the notebook and actually gets a proper look at his gaunt face, it might occur to her that he could be worse, to her. worse than facetious vagina drawings. in fact, that he is.

he looks at blue. surely she remembers the look, blank, the specific vacancy in his eyes as they track lazily over her face, somehow failing to see her even when his head is leveled straight at her. it might be infuriating. despite fire dragons scorching the sky over gansey's head, matthew nearly burned to death, the pandemonium of screams over july the fourth, and the grey man very nearly taking things into his own competent hands— despite everything, joseph kavinsky is having trouble remembering who she is. his stare dips toward her breasts then stop before reaching the station, go back up to meet hers.

but she drops ronan's name, and apparently that means something to him. it means enough, that he only sways a little bit toward a new gap in the crowd, instead of actually try to walk away through it.]

No. Hey.

[the smile he puts on his face is an afterthought. she's seen the kind before. what people of his particular echelon of wealth do when they realize they might have to make nice with the natives. there's a little more effort to it than there was when she was a waitress, because he puts two and two together, thinks to glance down at her arm now. she must be super too.] I know you from somewhere? Usually the girls who panty-launch the race have bigger panties. [he winks at her. get it. you're skinny.]

[ Oh.

There is a distinct effort not to haul off and hit him. Her hands tighten into little fists, her teeth grind together. Where there was frustration before, there's not rage as he throws fuel on the flames. Fuel in the form of a nagging feeling that she hates experiencing.

But then again, he means to do it. He knows exactly what he's doing. The same way Ronan knows how to pluck the right words at the right time that make her yell, Kavinsky knows exactly how to make her feel small and insignificant. As if she should be so lucky that he would deign to give her his attention.

There's a dangerous cycle going round and round inside her at feeling that way because of him and being angry that she feels that way. One day that cycle will get away from her. ]

Don't you have anything better to do than shoot at easy targets? [ Was it a jab at herself? A little. Was it her attempt to shake off the anger? A failing one, yes. ]

It's Blue. You'll probably remember my name when I kick your ass for talking about my panties like that again.

I was shaping the youth of America, [kavinsky points out blandly, his eyes swinging off to follow the gradual dispersion of the crowd. referring to the autograph session she just interrupted, obviously.

by the time he looks back at her, he's smiling, thinly, just a glint of incisors, as if he can't even be arsed to expend real laughter at her expense.]
Blue. Like the cartoon, right? Relax, Blue. No need to be so Goddamn feminist. [he offers her a reasonable facsimile of a placating voice, but it's kind of hard to tell if he's actually merely bored. either way, there's a certain arrogance inherent. most people don't like to be handled, least of all with a half-assed there-there from somebody who was just making gross remarks about her undergarments a moment ago.

he looks at her in the face.]
How about we kill two birds with one stone, [he says.] A little less Rated G. I got the peace pipe in my car. [of course he brought a car. a dozen white mitsubishis, way too many fucking drugs, and an ill-conceived kidnapping later, but kavinsky wouldn't be one to change his stripes.

even this gesture of hospitality falls somewhere in the realm of old habits, whether or not blue knows it. she's in because of ronan.]
