TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at someone else's thread, either!

01. The city of Heropa is what one might expect from a small, bright and cheery place, where locals are friendly enough and local shop owners might offer a free drink to welcome you to their fair city. Some of the locals might thank you for always lending your service to the nation, while others might not say anything -- but if you have something nasty to say, better not say anything at all, right?

Unfortunately, tragedy has struck today. It seems like the entire Heropa PD is parked out of a local, popular grocery chain. A huge crowd is amassed in the parking lot despite the best efforts of officers to get them to leave. They whisper about excitement and shame, and you don't have to ask if you just listen in a bit...

"What do you think he'll do to the employees? He sounded so serious..." "He really wants that pussy, huh?" "If I left my man for cheating on me, I'd take the damn cat, too!" "How does he think taking her and her coworkers hostage is gonna make her change her mind about him being a bad boyfriend?" "My wife is pregnant, please - if I don't get her favorite deli sub I might as well not go home!"

Domestic disputes! Tragic. The police aren't too sure how to handle this hostage situation, claiming the man only has a box cutter and isn't actually waving it around at the moment, but...are you an imPort? They'd really appreciate the help, okay. Get in there and counsel the unhappy couple. Or not!

02. De Chima, Virginia, is a large city with a healthy economy, and though it's quieter than Heropa, there are still large numbers of citizens to be awed at your very presence. Look at you! Organic wonder! Science and technology are the lifeblood of this city, so you're likely to come across a good many locals taking your picture with the newest of devices. The imPort craze remains high here, and you may find yourself cornered by overzealous imPort fans, media wannabes and opportunists alike, shoving cameras in your face.

Their questions are likely to be fairly mundane, however; get ready for an interview about your taste in romantic partners, personal underwear choices, favorite foods, and more!

03. Maurtia Falls, Pennsylvania has had its ups and downs since imPorts started reappearing. Several imPort heroes have put focused efforts into cleaning up the streets of this somewhat infamous city, while others have swooped in to help the criminal industry thrive. More so here than the streets of any other imPort city, the battle between good and evil looks more like a war of escalation than a heroic tale. That might make the less than warm welcome imPorts are given in the city a little more understandable. The emergence of locals with superpowers is hardly helping. While some of these individuals have turned to crime, many locals seem more inclined to defend their native powered drug dealer than help the non-native hero bring them to justice. Who are you to tell them how to live?

Spring has sprung, and flowers are popping up—in the form of seven-foot sentient musclebound daisies! A local criminal known as Flower Power has set them on the city, and they're going on a rampage, but a number of citizens have taken advantage. Do you go after the bushwhacking blossoms or the local looters?

04.Nonah, North Carolina, is the liveliest of all cities; loud, busy and there's some kind of energy in the air that gets everyone buzzing with excitement. To be American is to be part of a melting pot, and that there’s more money to be made by the thriving local industries hardly hurts.

Natives may gather around new arrivals and ask both personal and broad questions about life as an imPort, what they are looking forward to, what their favorite article of underwear is. A few night clubs offer free entrance - just this once! And they are bound to notice that a man has taken up a spot in a local street, eating pancakes off of a fold out table and holding up traffic. Many people are taking pictures and more interested in whether or not this is performance art than ushering him out of the way. He does have an extra chair and table, however, and will welcome and feed company, especially imPorts.

[He chuckled. That sounded like something Ryuji would say.]

That's true. I suppose small-town life isn't as romantic as it's portrayed.

[Yusuke had been so used to keeping the entire operation to himself and the other Phantom Thieves, under threat of imprisonment or death, that it felt uncomfortable revealing even this much to someone he had just met. Adachi hadn't done anything particularly suspicious, but just knowing about the power of Persona was enough for him to be cautious.

Still...this was the first he'd heard of other persona users, in other locations. He couldn't deny that he was curious.]

I was able to summon a legendary rebel. They tell me that I can do it again here, but I haven't any idea how.

[He scratches at the side of his face where his mask would be. The rules of the cognitive world are different from the real world, even a real world as abnormal as this. There had to be another way...]

[ Adachi let out a curious noise, scratching at the tip of his nose. ]

Well, it works the same way it does at home for me, though I guess it depends on how you do it. Seems to be different depending on how you get your powers.

[ Kirijo's group shot themselves in the head... even the thought of it made him want to squirm. Hopefully that wasn't the same for this guy. ]

...do you not have to rip off your mask, in Inaba? Or have you found a way to make it materialize in the real world?

[No faux suicides in Tokyo! But plenty of body horror.]

[ Adachi stares for a moment at that. ]

My mask? Nah, nothing like that. I just... kinda call for him, and he appears? It didn't work in the real world back home, but it works here.

Hmm...that sounds a lot more convenient, if lacking in symbolic value.

[ Adachi puffed his cheeks at that. ]

W-well, it's not like our Personas don't have meaning themselves, right? Their an important part of our Selves.

I don't mean to offend. The idea, behind ours, at least, is that you must willingly expose your true self in order to tap into its power. But I have no doubt that they have great personal meaning regardless. It could be that your team just has a tighter control over your power than we do.

[ It was similar, at least. He had watched every single one of those kids have their selves exposed by their Shadows from the safety of the other side of the TV screen. But... ]

For my... team, it was more the acceptance of their real self, rather than having it exposed.

[ Something he hadn't been able to do himself until recently, thanks to this place. Kinda sad, really, but this kid didn't need to know how pathetic he was. That could come later. ]

[Acceptance of one's true self, as opposed revealing it. The two groups seemed to access their Persona through similar means, but not quite the same. It would be interesting to think on the reasoning for why that was, the implications it made about the human condition.]

I think...that it was something I always knew was inside of me. I had kept it to myself, out of respect. But certain events in the Metaverse forced me into honesty.

[But philosophy could wait, right now, Yusuke was hungry for more information.]

I'm sorry, you mentioned another group? What about them?

'Metaverse'? So there's an actual name for that other world, hunh?

[ Well, he had no way of knowing it was the same "other world", but Metaverse sounded a lot cooler than "the TV world". ]

Oh! Yeah, Kirijo's group, over in Iwatodai. They apparently got their powers long before the group in Inaba did, though I don't know the details. One of their members is here, but I don't talk to him that much.

It's as official a name as there can be, given the nature of it, I think. The persona user from Iwatodai, would you have his name?

[He wasn't sure if it was safe to reveal his location. News of the Phantom Thieves had traveled far, and although if the Metaverse there was anything like the one he was used to Adachi should be able to piece it together, there was no way of knowing if that was the case.]

So how long have you been here?

Amada Ken-kun; I think he's only about thirteen or so now? He's a young kid.

[ Which means he was probably younger when that whole thing in Iwatodai happened. He... really didn't want to think about that. ]

Ehh... it's been about a year and a half? Probably closer to two years now that I think about it...

[ He waved a dismissive hand. ]

Time's really screwy here anyway. People come in from all different realities and points in time. It was twenty-twelve when I got ported in, but people have been coming from the far future and the far past left and right.

[Thirteen was...incredibly young. What Yusuke and his team had in common is that they had all been victims of abuse in some way. The severity may have ranged, but they were all troubled in their own way. And even though his own mistreatment by Madarame had gone on for many years before he put an end to it, his heart ached to know that other young people were troubled in similar ways. This child, he concluded, was likely a stronger man than either of them.

Yusuke continued with a solemn sigh.]

So I would have awakened about five years after you did, in Tokyo. We'll probably never know why it happens as it does.

Ugh... five years later, this stuff is still going on?

[ Adachi let out a tired sigh, reaching back to rub at his neck. ]

It's never gonna end, is it?

Perhaps all we can do is hope that those who find this power use it wisely.

[ So he says to someone that is probably the most irresponsible Persona user in the history of everything. Adachi let out a faint noise at that, scratching at the side of his cheek. Although, five years later... he really wanted to know if the kid had heard anything about executions in the Inaba region, though he doubted he would have had an answer. It's not like the police would publicize that kind of thing anyway. ]

Guess so. Even if there are people that would use this for bad things, there's always someone around to kick their ass.

Villains will always get their comeuppance. It's just a matter of getting to them before they do too much damage.

[ Adachi tried really hard not to let out a nervous laugh, but it came out anyway. Wow, this kid was intense... ]

R-right? They always do!

[That's not to say they can't be redeemed! Confess your crimes!

I take it you all defeated your enemy, then?

[ He did that already, weirdo! ]

Oh yeah. Multiple times. I even got to kick a fire god in the face.

The fire god must have been surprisingly short.

I wish-- wait, what's that supposed to mean?!

[ Look, just because you teenagers got stupidly tall, didn't mean he was that short! ]

The god we fought was enormous. Not even the tallest [him] or most flexible of us would have a chance of kicking it in the head.

[ ...okay, fair. Adachi let out a disgruntled noise, rubbing his hand over his eyes. ]

...well it was kinda leaning over... and I did jump...

[ ...this wasn't the point?! ]

E-either way, we totally won in the end.
