TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.
Steve Rogers | MCU
There was a newspaper hanging out of a garbage can. Fishing it out, Steve settled down on a nearby bench and began to read, wishing he had his old notepad and pencil to jot down notes with.]
Soviet threat? Thought that was at least 10 years ago....
04 [Costume or not, shield or not, Steve Rogers has always been a hero. Dr. Erskine's words have stayed with him all this time; "Don't be a perfect soldier, but a good man." It was, in some way, ingrained into him now. And seeing those children in danger, he didn't stop, his body moving on forward seemingly on instinct, pushing the two kids out of the way of the incoming hovercar.
Steve made a good try at jumping clear of the incoming cars. And it would have worked, except one of the following policecars skidded at the last moment, clipping him on the side and sent him flying against a wooden dumpster nearby. ]
Wildcard
[Hit me with something, anything~]
02
What magics could have so branded a son of Odin against his will.]
What is this Soviet? How much of a threat do you deem it to be?
02
The thought doesn't make him very happy.]
Soviet is short for Soviet Union, which was known as Russia back in our world. It was their old name. [That much he had caught up to, in terms of history.]
It's only what the newspaper says, Thor. I don't know enough to tell.

I see. [He does not press the issue. After all, he knows even less of historical Earth politics than Steven does.]
What else does the paper of news inform you of?
no subject
Not much different then the one back home. How the local sports teams are doing, the weather forecast, what movies are showing this week... [Steve shakes his head. The crosswords page is missing.] One thing that's different is there's a section focusing on what the 'heroes' have been up to.
no subject
What mighty deeds have they accomplished?
no subject
There's not a lot of detail; I suspect local government classifies a lot of their assignments. Some foiled robberies and the like. And something about giant robots going on the rampage that was eventually stopped?
04
there were a lot of connections to make upon the sight of him. this was unmistakably Captain America. the saving the kids from a hovering vehicle only sealed it. there were differences that he could place already, so he does what anyone would do to commemorate the moment.
he lifts his phone to take a picture.]

Right now, he's too busy trying not to groan in pain and attempting to pull himself out to reassure the two kids screaming 'oh god he's dead' and 'what do will do, what do we do?'.]
no subject
A little bit of a spill, hm?
[he's decked out completely, complete with horned tiara.]
no subject
Just a bit. Thanks.

You'd think with the flying hover cars of mortal technology would have safeguards in place for such occasions.
[he lets the words drop casually, his fingers gliding over the screen of his phone. (he might be sending the picture to someone before he discreetly tucks it away again.)]

[Steve finally sends the children off before turning to get his first good look at Loki, which results in puzzled frown on his face.]
You look...familiar.

Her heels clic-clac on concrete.]
History likes to repeat itself, apparently. Even when you're in another universe.
no subject
He lifts his head up at hearing the distinctive sound of heals on concrete, just barely remembering not to address the woman as ma'ma.]
Maybe, Miss. I'd have to know more about this world to be sure.
no subject
[Her manners and tone are pleasant, even when she deliberately scans him from head to toe.]
Fresh arrival, I take it.

[Steve gives a polite nod.]
I am. And you, miss?
no subject
Oh, no. I think I'm almost a veteran by this point. Not that I like to feel that old.
[Isn't she so humorous. After another pause,]
Christine Stanford.

[Steve's willing to play along.]
Steve Rogers. Nice to meet you, miss.

Longer than that.
[Don't mind him, he was just wandering by and happened to overhear you, the first person who has made any sense since he got here. He looks like he wants to come over and sit down, but is aware it might be strange to assume they can bond over one small detail. He rocks on his heels instead and glances away, his hands shoved in the pockets of his jeans.]
no subject
You're probably right. I'm a little vague on modern history but I remember that they stopped using the name Soviet around...1991?
[Steve's just glad someone else's pointed that out, and this young man looks more well informed about this than he was.]
no subject
...Maybe he's been teleported into a comic book.
He steps closer.]
Yeah, after that it became the Russian Federation, and a bunch of other countries popped up. That's the Extreme Cliffs Notes version, anyway.
no subject
That matches up to what I know. But maybe history went differently here. I should find a library or something to check.

Or maybe Wikipedia.

( she didn't mean to pry-
no actually she did. after all, she had ears that could hear things she needed to hear.
but the persona she was displaying before steve said otherwise. )
This place, it seems it has the power to bring people from different times. I myself was born in 2007, yet....here I am, still the same age I was back home, back in 2024.
( she smiled up at steve and then glanced down at the paper. )
Are you new here, or have you been here a while?
