we're all reponsible here

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

    02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

    03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

    04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[After seeing and failing to help with these hover cars a handful of times, Kate had decided to do something very important: she figured out what made the cars hover, and determined whether or not she could actually use that to her advantage. Car chases are a lot fairer when one of the cars can be taken out with a handy arrow. She misses the importance of tires, after all.

All the same, she's figured out precisely where that module is, and in a risky move, she dashes forward, drawing her bowstring back to her chin, arrow in hand, and lets it loose. The arrow itself is a trick one: set to create a very, very minor explosion within two seconds of impact. Kate rolls back and shouts to Eli (and the kids):]
It should be good, but take care of them!

[This is what teamwork was invented for, after all.]

[Eli doesn't actually see her, or the arrow- he just hears her, but it's enough. 'Take care of them' could mean many things, but Eli decides to take the safer option and turn around, shielding the kids. It was probably a smarter idea than facing the full blunt of a hovering car at that speed anyway.

There's a little explosion, a sound similar to a crash... and the car crashing into him he was expecting never actually comes. He looks down to make sure the kids are alright, and then up towards where Kate's voice came from.]

Well, that's a way to do it.

I had some time to do research.

[Kate doesn't stay there long. She rises up, and while she knows the cops will be moving in soon enough, there's a very large part of her that isn't keen on sticking around. Icky registration business, it can get the best of them.

Then again, Kate's done this song and dance before, so she doesn't even think twice before she swings her bow over her shoulder, and she goes to join Eli. There's a part of her that's concerned with slinking off into the shadows, but she's frankly ... relieved to see him. It's been a long time, and his absence had done a number on the team as a whole. While they fought over leadership, she still wishes he had been there in Teddy's absence, there to help keep Billy steady in a way that she never could. They had gotten into this together, after all, and she's wondered numerous times if Eli could've helped Billy step out of that apartment much sooner.

And that's not even counting her own, extremely complicated feelings. Time, more than anything, has helped her move on. For her, it's been years, and there's no sensation of similar feelings rushing back because of that. But that's complicated in and of itself.

No matter what it is, though, she's glad to see him, and even if they have to move, she's motioning for him to join her with a smile.]
I think we're all good, but we might want to get moving.

That has to be the fastest research. [For him it's been... well, actually not long at all. And the fact that he's actually wearing his patriot suit should be a clue for that. Unaware of her thoughts he's simply glad to see a teammate again- one who managed to stop the car before he ended up in the hospital, to boot.

The car isn't hovering anymore, the kids are safe, and he's found Kate (or, rather, she's found him) so as far as he's concerned: mission accomplished.]

Why? Where are we going? [But he follows, anyway.]

There's a low-grade registration situation here. Similar to what we experienced back home, but not nearly as ... dire. [Kate doesn't need to say what's obvious: she has zero desire to ever register as a hero. As such, those cops are going to wonder what she's doing there if she's not a registered hero. Even when they went from the superhero Civil War to Tony Stark getting what he wanted to ... all the bad things that followed, she never regretted that decision. Kate, if anything, is a woman who sticks to her convictions.

She starts walking, but she keeps her eyes on Eli, still pleased to see him. After the Patrinot situation, there's really nothing she can feel otherwise. All that time, she had been left wondering whether something had happened to him. Even if they all knew the truth, it didn't make seeing the actual Eli any less good.]

As for where, I thought I should bring you to Billy. We've got a place here. [Tommy was staying there, too, but Kate's not keen to mention him lest there be any typical Eli posturing when it comes to that situation. She doesn't want to dive them that far back that quickly (for her, anyway).]

[There's a low hum of understanding as he reaches to rub the back of his neck. He'd been pretty vocal about his distaste for the registration act back at home, and he thought they had left all of that behind. He's really not all that eager to repeat something like that.

So he focuses on the next things she says, because he'd rather talk about teammates than remember Civil War. It's actually not been that long, for him.]

You've got a place here?
selfequipped: (heh heh heh heh)

[personal profile] selfequipped 2014-07-02 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, and trust me, it beats the alternative. [Which is shockingly not homelessness, but she's not going to clarify.] We've had to settle in, since it doesn't seem like we'll be heading anywhere anytime soon.

[personal profile] truestpatriot 2014-07-04 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[And since he assumes he alternative is, actually, being homeless he doesn't even ask.] Well, I guess that makes sense. But how long have you guys been here anyway?

There has to be a way out, if there's a way in. [Pointing out the obvious: might actually be a superpower. But it's just weird to think that his team might have spent that long in this place without him noticing- have they been along, all this time? Is there other people from their world around?]
selfequipped: (he spent too much on it of course)

[personal profile] selfequipped 2014-07-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Five months for me. [Sometimes the time feels like it's flown by, but there are aspects of it that make it feel longer. The fact that she doesn't have a choice of heading back to their New York is the biggest one. Running off to Los Angeles feels like an even worse idea with this additional time added on, and she knows she'll be going right back to that, possibly without any awareness that she'd been here in the first place.]

And there's a way out: the Porter. They just can't get it to cooperate. The other avenues can't even be explored, even by some big guns. I'm talking Stark, Pym, and more.
