TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[Aw, seriously? Is this guy going to get prickly at him because he wanted to lessen part of the blow? One day, he's going to team up with another dude in a mask, and it's not going to end up with him being questioned. He just hopes it's going to be soon.

He just spreads his arms out in front of him and shrugs.]

What do you think I'm doing? That wasn't gonna be a fun time for you.

Well... [He can't deny that one. Whatever his strength might be the car would still have made a number on him, and whoever the other hero is he was trying to help. Now the kids are safe, the car wrecked and the policemen have gotten the driver.]

Thanks, I guess. But I could have handled it. [He squints at the costume.] Is that an armor...?

Hey, I don't know what you can do just by looking at you. Better safe than sorry, yeah?

[Teamwork, guys! Teamwork is the best! Especially when it helps people from being severely injured, maimed and/or killed.

He doesn't recognize Eli from home, but then again, he doesn't recognize most people from home. He supposes the guy must have some sort of superstrength to back up those claims, and where there's superstrength, there's usually a whole host of other powers. Of course, the conversation's been shifted to his powers. Jaime nods, idly flexing his fingers.]

But yeah, this is armour.

Cool. [And it is, even if he says so a bit reluctantly. He always takes a while to warm up to new superheroes his age. Might be his competitive streak, might be he's just naturally distrustful of other teenagers..]

Are you some fan of Iron Man or something? [He just hopes he didn't end up going by Iron Lad.]

Nope.

[Iron Man, Iron Man... nope, not ringing a bell. Once he gets back home, he's going to sit down with an encyclopedia and read about every single active superhero, he swears to god.

(He's totally never going to do that.)]

Who's he? A dude who can turn his skin into iron, or something?

Oh, shit. We're in some alternate Earth or something aren't we?

[Yeah, that's what he takes from that. There's some heroes he could have totally believed someone hadn't heard of. But Iron Man? Not possible.]

No, he's- he's got an armor, like yours. ...Except red, I guess, and it looks less like a bug.

Right. [Jaime looks down at his armour for a second, wondering whether or not to be offended that he looks like a bug before remembering that he's named after a bug anyway. All it means is that his theme's actually working out for him.]

We're in an alternate Earth, [he confirms with a nod of his head.] I'm not from around here either. None of the imPorts are. If your world's anything like mine, the more you look around, the more changes you're gonna see.

Wonderful. I'm not even sure why I'm surprised, I guess I can scratch that one from the hero-list. [He wonders how many visits to other worlds he'll have to pay to get his Avengers card?]

How long have you been here? How long do people stay here?

Alternate universes are kind of a thing in the community - [which he is now part of, god help them all] - but the big leagues never say that they're gone for as long as this. I've been here for a couple months now, but a few of the imPorts say that they've been here for years. Plural.

Plural. [Said with a bit of a sigh because of course it's plural. Of course it's years.]

You said 'a few', a few of the imPorts. Does that mean not all of them end up in here for a year?

Yep. People get ported home sometimes, but people say it's random, like the Porter's on the fritz or something. Whatever the actual reason is, folks who've been here for that long are pretty rare.

[He shrugs, not bothering to hide his skepticism. He doesn't think that the government is flat-out lying - they would have sent Lucifer and the Manipulator home a long, long time ago if they were able to - but he doesn't buy into the whole spiel either.]
