TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.
Victoria Black || OC || OTA
02
Considering her condition, being mobbed by crowds was a test on her control. Being disorientated, confused and in the bright Florida sunlight just made things worse for her. Dressed in dusty blacks and greys, worn and patched with body armour, she didn't exactly blend in, inhumanly pale, eyes squinting in the bright sun. Just an average sized woman in all respect it was easy for her to get swamped, the vampire recoiling from every touch or request for a picture.
Anyone out there want to help a girl out?]
no subject
Great.
But that doesn't stop her approaching.]
Alight, everyone can fuck right off. Find someone else to bother.
[There are enough parents-with-kids that Kara swearing is all that's needed to have them leaving, muttering to themselves about some of those ruder imPorts.
Luckily Kara doesn't care, she just turns to look at Victoria.]
You good?
no subject
I will be. [She straightens, looking the other in the eye.]
Thank you.
no subject
[I will be isn't the best answer, but Kara will accept it for now.]
You're gonna wanna move towns if the sun bothers you.
[Because. Florida.]
no subject
[There's a wry quirk to her lips, her accent a blend of Australian and something more European. She takes several steps back, moving into the shade of a building.]
So you're not human.
no subject
Haven't been for a long time. I'm a valkyrie.
no subject
I know someone at home that would love to meet you.
I'm Victoria.
no subject
[It could be either, but she's always kind of interested to hear about other valkyries, even if it hurts a little.]
Kara. You gonna tell me what you are?
[Not that she can't guess, but still.]
no subject
[A grin and another drag.]
Vampire, but I figured you knew that.
Don't worry, I won't start killing people. That's too messy.

Michael stopped for another picture, no longer fighting off the imPort fans. He'd tried at first to politely turn them away, but it was easier to just let them take their picture, then move on. Although, when they got to look at those pictures, they'd be the only ones smiling in them.
He was no longer angry, but he was still confused, and just a little bit annoyed.
The woman stood out from the rest of the people, her hair dark and skin so pale, catching his eye as she moved past. Her expression mirrored his own, and he stopped to greet her as they were both most likely new here.]
Hello. I'm the archangel Michael.
no subject
Well you're very upfront.
[Her slight accent makes the 'w' sound like it was combined with a 'v'. She gives a smile, it's a little strained, the people around them watching and staring with no sense of privacy.]
Victoria Black. A pleasure. [A shutter goes off, a bright flash illuminating both their faces and she turns, settling a cold glare on the person responsible. The man with the camera goes a little pale and quickly leaves.]
I don't know about you but I really need some shade.
no subject
[The camera flash causes him to blink, but her glare has the man turning tail and scurrying off.]
How about over there?
[There was an unoccupied bench with an adjacent tree nearby, and the shade adequate for their needs. If they hurried, they might make it before anyone else takes the seat.
Michael started to move, the crowd parting easily for him as he did. Once there, he sat stiffly to one side, gesturing for her to sit next to him.]
And where are you from, if you don't mind the question.
no subject
[She says regarding the bench and follows him, pulling her hood up to better hide her face. It was the only bit of skin exposed. She turns and sits gracefully, one leg smoothly crossing over the other.]
Why? The accent?
Australia and Germany. You?
no subject
[The accent was intriguing, but he was referring more to her style of attire, pale skin, and striking features. The archangel couldn't help but assume that she was from another world, like himself, as that it seemed to be a common trait among the new imPorts.
Some were from similar worlds as his own, others from amazingly different versions. He'd yet to see anyone from his, but he wouldn't count out the possibility.]
You just don't look very human. [It was far from an insult.] And I was curious as to where you're from. Maybe we could compare our home worlds, see if we are from the same place.
[It was a strange request, but he genuinely hoped someone here would be from the same place as he was.]
no subject
[It was said with a teasing warmth. As he looked, she looked back. He seemed human enough, but he smelled distinctly different and he way he moved, all that poise. He was a warrior, she didn't doubt that. His comment on not looking human makes her laugh.]
Well I was human. Once. Haven't been for years. But unless you've got vampires in your world, I don't think either one of us is going to have luck.
[Her expression softens, catching the faint bit of hope in his voice.]
Sorry. But let's compare notes anyway. I've never met an Angel before.
no subject
[To be honest with himself, he hadn't paid enough attention to anything on Earth except the humans. He had been consumed by his want to protect them, that everything else had slipped under the radar. It hadn't always been like that, but it was almost as if he couldn't remember a time when he hadn't felt that way. It was entirely likely that there were vampires in his world.]
And I've never met a vampire. Until today.
[Michael leaned against the back of the bench, crossing his legs at the ankles. The sun was bright, and he felt inordinately relaxed.]
Anything striking about your world, that I would have to know to be from it. An extermination war, perhaps?
no subject
[Her lips curve, watching him relax. He seemed to enjoy the sun, while she huddled in the shade offered by the tree, still cool despite the warmth of the day.]
An extermination war? [Her brow furrows.] There's... It's been...
[She sighs and shifts, turning her body a little towards him.]
About twenty years ago, I was in Sydney and to the north, flash of light, shock wave of heat that blows out nearly every bit of glass in the city. People think it's a bomb, nuclear except no mushroom cloud, no sudden vaporising. Just light then, the wave and then all the power goes out. Electronics are fried.
And you'd think that'd be bad enough except things start coming out of the darkness, as if the explosion had woken them up.
We called them the Slaugh and it's rather apt if you know your faerie folklore.
Sound familiar?

Come now, break it up, why don't you give the girl some space.
[A not-so-gentle push through with his wings as he makes his way to her. There was a thought to wrap his arm around her shoulders but she was already shying away from others as is so instead of further crowding her he opened his other wing to curl around her protectively without touching, creating a wall of feathers around her back and side. She could still see the people before her but at least they weren't surrounding her. And the people were quickly disbursing as Gabriel stood like a sentinel beside the Vampire.]
There now. I think that did it. [A warm smile to her.]
Would you like an escort? [He withdraws his wings to fold them at his back.]
no subject
She blinks surprised when he moves a wing around her protectively.]
Wow. Nice rescue.
[She smiles, fangs flashing and rubs at the back of her neck, a touch shy.]
Thanks for that. [She watches the wings withdraw and fold away, enchanted.]
Maybe? Depends. What will I owe you for it?
no subject
It was my pleasure.
[And he laughs a bit at the thought, but then seems to consider if he'd want anything.]
Your company? Perhaps we could hit that malt shop I hear so much about, or find a place for a stiff drink if you'd rather?
no subject
Got a name?
[For a guy with wings, he wasn't so bad so far. Victoria allows herself to relax a little, now that they were being left well enough alone.]
Alright. I'll take the stiff drink option if you don't mind.
no subject
I am Gabriel. And you are?
Oh holy crap how have I missed this for so long?
Victoria. Let me guess, you're an angel.
No worries!
Archangel to be precise. And you are a Vampire, are you not? Though I must say I am impressed you can manage to walk in the sun, not a luxury many from legend can afford.
Re: No worries!
[She squints at him through the glare of the sun and nods.]
Good eye.
I come from strong blood and I have a few years behind me. Still I'd like to get out of it as soon as possible.
