The Mistletoe Meme

It was a quiet moment in Heropa, FL, when the next devious plot of an unknown organization was realized. With the holiday season upon all the town, bundles of mistletoe with interference technology hidden in the festive bows and pins holding them together was distributed throughout the town and into all the residences of the imPorts.

The interference technology creates a stasis field keeping imPorts trapped underneath it, protecting the mistletoe itself with a small barrier. However, it only seems able to hold two people at a time, and and the reaction of the nanites to sudden changes in chemistry brought on by embracing or kissing brings the stasis field crashing down, leaving the mistletoe vulnerable to destruction at that time.

It's up to you, imPorts, to break free of these mistletoe traps and destroy all the mistletoe in Heropa!

Jonathan, don't take this the wrong way... but you're in danger.

[if Annie was hoping that this would someone get him to vacate the premises, she will be sorely disappointed. rather than retreat he steps closer to her, brow furrowing in grave concern. usually when people throw shit like that out someone nearby is suddenly a grotesque zombie.]

[ No, sorry, with zombies, she just kills them if she can, incapacitates if not, then tells the person not paying attention to haul ass.

... As a strategy, it just doesn't work here. In fact, all it does is... encourage Jonathan to step into the same field that has Annie, leaving him mistletoe caught. She brings a hand to her face, pushing her bangs back behind an ear before she sighs inwardly. ]

The mistletoe. I was trying to warn you.

[he looks up at it, then chuckles softly. this is his first encounter with the altered stuff, so he doesn't realize that he's just strode right into a really embarrassing situation.]

Thank you for trying, but it's nothing to worry about. The custom isn't mandatory.

Yeah. So I heard.

[ She lets one hand fall to her hip, looking... a little displeased. Not at what he says, but that it isn't true. ]

Try walking away.

[he looks at her quizzically, but obligingly takes another step in an attempt to continue on past her. the mystification melts away as his leg meets inexplicable resistance.]

...ah.

Indeed.

[ It's not meant as a mockery, but it does underline her irritation. ]

There's some mechanism involved with the mistletoe. From what I've observed... [ in having really bad luck and this stuff being hidden everywhere ] ... it erects a forcefield when introduced to the presence of an imPort. It only works on imPorts... and the forcefield stays in place until the tradition has been enacted.

... To be fair, I haven't tried... other ways.

[if you look not very closely at all, you can see that Jonathan's ears have turned a nice shade of crimson. if 'other ways' don't prove effective, his face will likely soon follow.]

Perhaps we should see if something else works first. It has nothing to do with you! It's just - I'm engaged.

[ look she's not out to make a killing making out with people, if this was solved with punches she'd. find that stupid but also acceptable.

[ except her skills with hugs approach the level of "aracely has hugged me twice" and that's most her experience right there. so... she... stalls out after taking a step forward.

how do hugs work. if she looks a little lost................................... she is. ]

[Jonathan sees that, and it pretty much shoves his own discomfort way onto the back burner as anyone else being in even mild distress always does. not that he isn't going to apologize first, because this is kind of forward for a lady he isn't related or romantically attached to.]

[and then he closes the distance between them and pulls her into an amazingly gentle hug for a man modeled after a steamroller. Jonathan obviously knows how this shit works.]

[ SMALLEST STIFFEST PERSON HERE in his arms because Annie is not good at hugs and most the time when men have hugged her (okay the one time she remembers with her dad) it was to have him cling to her and say it's too late to apologize.

Sorry if literally all Annie can do is stand there, Jonathan.

It's about the limit of how she can handle this situation at the moment.

On the upside, the barrier falls.

On the downside, Jonathan has to be the one to take that mistletoe and stomp on it, because Annie's kind of blinking and stock still at the moment. ]

[honestly, Jonathan has been in so many stranger and/or more awkward situations that Annie's sudden transformation into a marble statue just rolls off him. he gives her a soft pat on the back before releasing her and reaching up to tear down the mistletoe. with a mildly irritated look on his face he engulfs the thing with ripple and it falls apart in his palm.]

That should takes care of things, hopefully.

[ She immediately is looking up IS ANY MORE OF THAT SHIT AROUND... and when none immediately makes itself known, she relaxes a fraction, taking two steps back and breathing out an audible sigh of relief. ]

It's everywhere. Be on the lookout. I don't know what the purpose behind this attack is, but it's aimed at imPorts, and it doesn't appear to be filmed or meant for... that kind of showing.

[he frowns down at the remains of the mistletoe before letting it fall onto the ground. even though the threat is apparently over with, he still moves a little to the side of the doorway before replying. just in case.]

That's strange. Is it really an attack when it doesn't appear to do much in the way of harm?

[beyond, like, destroying people's dignity he supposes. Jonathan has a high tolerance for bullshit.]

Imagine who you're immobilizing and slowing down for how long, when you can't neutralize the threat without massive property damage or engaging it willfully.

[ no she's... she's actually thinking about how... this would fuck them over for certain um. crisis. responses.

dignity can go die in the face of that, but the slow down and the fracturing of communication is enough to get people killed THIS IS HOW HER PARANOIA IS JONATHAN ]

It's more than long enough to pick off who you can, especially if there's a way to manipulate these fields from the outside, or overcome the flaw.

[ THIS. IS. MISTLEWAR? She doesn't sound at all hysterical over this - her whole delivery is matter of fact and musing, letting go of the irritation as she actually looks at logistics. Things don't need to be large to be capable of taking people out, one by one. Look at her. (Ha.) ]

Has any of that happened yet?

[it's concerning, certainly, but Jonathan knows that just because something is possible doesn't mean it's likely to occur. it's better to get a handle on the situation rather than spiral off into paranoia-fueled wariness.]

[ she looks up sideways at him, giving a small shake of her head. of course not.

because it's a holiday meme!!!

but at the same time, she lives on that kind of edge because of her life circumstances. if it turns out to just be a stupid joke? she'll be happy. it's not that she's attached to any other feeling, just that she walks on that side to save whatever it is she does of her expectations. ]

Then perhaps we'll be lucky enough for it to remain that way.

[maybe for once it's just a joke? in polar opposition to Annie, Jonathan is impossibly optimistic despite his own life. hope for the best, suffer through the worst regardless.]

I hope so.

[ It's okay, even polar opposites, they both get kicked out of the picture pretty damn young. NO ONE WINS, EVERYONE LOSES, a life story. ]
