The Mistletoe Meme

It was a quiet moment in Heropa, FL, when the next devious plot of an unknown organization was realized. With the holiday season upon all the town, bundles of mistletoe with interference technology hidden in the festive bows and pins holding them together was distributed throughout the town and into all the residences of the imPorts.

The interference technology creates a stasis field keeping imPorts trapped underneath it, protecting the mistletoe itself with a small barrier. However, it only seems able to hold two people at a time, and and the reaction of the nanites to sudden changes in chemistry brought on by embracing or kissing brings the stasis field crashing down, leaving the mistletoe vulnerable to destruction at that time.

It's up to you, imPorts, to break free of these mistletoe traps and destroy all the mistletoe in Heropa!

I didn't plan to stop at all... in truth.

[ She gestures over their heads, looking up. ]

There's a plant pest problem imPorts have been running into today.

[governorkang]

[He looks up as well and frowns.]

Mistletoe. Isn't it an easily avoidable problem?

It should be. Yet for some reason... it isn't. For imPorts.

[ she says dryly. ]

And only imPorts.

[governorkang]

What do you mean?

[...he's getting a bad feeling about this.]

There's a sort of... force field generated by the mistletoe when it's activated by imPort proximity. You can't leave unless you can interrupt whatever makes it work... which seems to be the same as putting the mistletoe to traditional use. Though I've found hugs work in some cases.

[ she adds, because this was a relief to learn - eventually. ]

[governorkang]

Traditional... you mean by kissing.

[WHAT.]

... Yes. By kissing.

Though as I said, sometimes, hugs have also broken the barrier long enough to destroy the mistletoe before it reset the whole thing.

[Fuck his life.]

You're sure about this? There's no other way?

[ She understands the sentiment.

... He's also not the first married (or engaged) person she's been trapped with today. THANK YOU MISTLETOE? ]

None that I've discovered so far. Waiting hasn't done anything. Asking another to attack the mistletoe hasn't provided usable results yet, though they didn't get stuck, either.

[Even if he didn't have a mate he'd still be entirely Not Interested.]

You said a hug might work instead. Nothing in particular, just a hug?

[ Annie hesitates, then holds her arms out to the side. ]

Just a hug. Are there different kinds of hugs? It was just a brief thing.

[governorkang]

...well, let's get this over with so we can destroy that damn mistletoe. Hopefully it'll work.

[He sighs, and moves forward to hug Annie.]

[ He gets one heck of an awkward hug in return, but hey, look, she's trying. There's a sort of pat-pat on his back someplace that seems... appropriateish, and she's all of five foot even, where as he's... not. Either way, the hug seems to work, the barrier collapsing after the contact is made. ]

Can you get to it?

[ She asks as she takes a step backward to get out of Kang's way. Annie doesn't have anything long range on her right now. ]

[governorkang]

[Because of the height difference, the top of her head barely reaches his chest. Once she's stepped back, he reaches up and yanks the mistletoe out of its spot, dumping it on the ground and crushing it with one clawed foot.]

That should do it.

[ Gosh each time a bunch of mistletoe is crushed she's almost tempted to smile. It's so stupid, and yet it feels so good. ]

Thank you. I've tried taking the mistletoe out before getting caught, but it doesn't seem to work that well.

Of course.

[He rolls his eyes.]

How prolific does it seem to be?

In houses, businesses, hidden in trees, in other decorations... I've heard that some have seen it in the other cities, but not like here in Heropa. There's not set pattern other than being... pervasive.

[governorkang]

[He snorts.]

So I just need to keep an eye out.

Until the situation is resolved, yes.

[ Least satisfactory answer? ... Probably. ]

[governorkang]

[He glances up to make sure new mistletoe didn't appear and takes a step back just in case.]

[This has to be one of the most awkward ways he's ever met someone.]

[ At least they didn't kiss. There have been weirder ways today. ]
