TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ Fortunately, the next kid you see with this tech is a little more familiar. He's even wearing his usual getup: dark hoodie, red robot shirt, annnnnd a backpack full of all kinds of junk. Which he is levitating out of his backpack and in front of him, making an impromptu workspace out of this bench. Huh. That part's probably new. But like heck Hiro's gonna just wait on a bench for the bus without trying to cannibalize the floating components from a hoverboard to install in a teeny tiny version of Baymax.

Just as he's floating away a bit of wire from the bitty bot's exoskeleton, Hiro happens to look up. And then he double-takes. ]

Wasabi?

[turnsignals]

[ Wasabi, for his part, doesn't even notice the kid messing with stuff on the bench until he calls his name. ]

Hiro? Oh, man, am I glad to see y--

[ Wait. Head tilt. ] ...Wha-- How are you-- [ wavy hands ] --doing that?

[microbrobotics]

[ Oh my god. Wasabi doesn't even know about the superpowers yet, does he? Hiro is getting such a grin on his face. ]

Oh, y'know. Latent superpowers.

[turnsignals]

Super-- [ He leans in, eyes going wide. ] You have superpowers? Since when?

[ Because dude, that is cool, but also a little creepy and keeping secrets from friends is bad, mkay? ]

[microbrobotics]

[ On the one hand, it's not nice to lie to your friends. Especially someone as nice and also straight-laced as Wasabi, who really doesn't deserve being trolled like this (unlike, say, Fred, who get trolled without mercy in this situation). On the other hand ... when is he ever going to get this opportunity again? Never? Never. Decision made. ]

Well, I kind of had a feeling while I was making your upgrades? Didn't want you guys to think I was crazy so I never mentioned it.

[turnsignals]

[ Squiiiiiiint. Wasabi highly doubts that story, bro. ]

Really? Really really?

[microbrobotics]

[ No fun at alllll. And Hiro's grinning too much for this to possibly be true. ]

How else did I build our stuff so fast?

[turnsignals]

[ Wasabi ruffles his hair playfully. ]

'Cause you're a genius, stupid.

[microbrobotics]

You can't call me genius and stupid in the same sentence, jeez.

[ He laughs though, relaxing a little. To be honest, he probably looks happier than the last time Wasabi saw him. Work has been good for his mental health. ]

But okay yeah, you caught me. Everyone gets superpowers here.

[turnsignals]

[ Wasabi gives Hiro a smile that says, "of course I can, I'm your friend," before a look of dawning realization crosses his face. ]

Ohhh, so that's what that was about.

[ He pulls out his file, which he'd stuffed into his back pocket, and flips it open, searching through the pages then pointing to a paragraph. ]

"Special skills: laser creation-slash-manipulation." I didn't know what they meant by that, before.

[microbrobotics]

[ Oooh, ooh, Hiro wants to see too. He leans over to snoop at Wasabi's file. ]

Whoa. That sounds insanely cool. Mind's kind of tame in comparison.

[turnsignals]

Really? You're gonna knock on telekinesis, now?

[ But he's rounding the bench to sit down next to Hiro's makeshift workstation, smiling at the mini Baymax because of course there's a mini Baymax. ]

I mean, think how useful telekinesis is! I could clean up my workshop in no time! And I don't even know how to use my superpower. Pretty useless if I can't even do it, right?

[microbrobotics]

[ Of course there is. It's not charged up so it can't move right now, but it sure is cute. ]

The fact that you just mentioned using it for cleaning means it is, in fact, kinda tame. You'll be doing laser stuff in no time.

[turnsignals]

[ You're asking for another hair-ruffle, bro. ]

But how, though?

[ He stares at his hands as though they are keeping a secret from him. ]

[microbrobotics]

[ Okay, okay, you get one free one. The rest are subject to the Goofy Face Tax. Which Hiro is totally making right now. ]

That's ... uh ... a good question. It took me a while to figure it out.

[turnsignals]

[ He squints, concentrating. He might even be saying, "Laser... laser.." quietly under his breath. And then pzoosh! Out pops a small blue-green laser from his index finger, a couple inches long. ]

[microbrobotics]

[ Good thing Hiro wasn't leaning in too closely there or that could have ended really badly. As it is, he jolts back, both surprised and pleased. ]

-- Whoa! Nice!

[turnsignals]

[ Wasabi grins. And what kind of nerd would he be if he didn't start making lightsaber noises? A terrible nerd, that's what. ]

Pshhhhht. Pshhhhhhhhrrt.

[microbrobotics]

[ Oh my god Wasabi. Hiro is rightfully cracking up at that. ]

At least you got a good guy color.

[turnsignals]

[ Wasabi smirks, because he sure did get a good guy color, then stops his concentration and the laser disappears.

Now that that's settled, he turns his attention to the mini Baymax. ]

So, what're you working on?

[microbrobotics]

[ Awww, no more lightsabers for now. They'll have plenty of time to nerd out over that later. ]

Oh, uh - helper bot! I'm gonna make a baker's dozen of these little guys and have 'em fetch tools for me. The trick is how to get them up to high shelves.

[ He gestures down at the cannibalized hover core that he's installing in Baymini's back. ]

So you're installing the hover tech from the skateboard. Nice.

[ All Wasabi can think is that Tadashi would be proud of his little bro's ingenuity and talent. ]

You seem pretty used to all this. This place, I mean.[ ]

[microbrobotics]

[ He has to look away, kind of embarrassed. ]

Well - I've been here almost a month now. You get used to it fast.

Hold up, a month!? Hiro, how...? I just saw you yesterday, back home!

[microbrobotics]

You probably did! But - like - this is some kind of Narnia place. Time doesn't pass on the outside but does pass here.
