TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ Okay. This may not be San Fransokyo, where, you know, his friends and his life are. But Florida's not so bad, if their tech is anything to go by. He thought his friends were special with their tech stuff, but hovercars? Just... around? A kid whizzes by on a hovering skateboard, nearly knocking into him, and Wasabi shouts after him, ]

Hey! Shouldn't you have a... a permit for that, at least?

[ Buuut the kid is long gone, so Wasabi just shakes his head and keeps walking. His fingers are itching, wanting to take some of this stuff apart and see how it works, but he keeps his hands firmly shoved in his pockets. He's not sure where he's headed, exactly-- where is he going to go in a city where he doesn't know anyone? But moving is better than standing still with his jaw hanging open, so... moving it is. ]

[microbrobotics]

[ Fortunately, the next kid you see with this tech is a little more familiar. He's even wearing his usual getup: dark hoodie, red robot shirt, annnnnd a backpack full of all kinds of junk. Which he is levitating out of his backpack and in front of him, making an impromptu workspace out of this bench. Huh. That part's probably new. But like heck Hiro's gonna just wait on a bench for the bus without trying to cannibalize the floating components from a hoverboard to install in a teeny tiny version of Baymax.

Just as he's floating away a bit of wire from the bitty bot's exoskeleton, Hiro happens to look up. And then he double-takes. ]

Wasabi?

[ Wasabi, for his part, doesn't even notice the kid messing with stuff on the bench until he calls his name. ]

Hiro? Oh, man, am I glad to see y--

[ Wait. Head tilt. ] ...Wha-- How are you-- [ wavy hands ] --doing that?

[microbrobotics]

[ Oh my god. Wasabi doesn't even know about the superpowers yet, does he? Hiro is getting such a grin on his face. ]

Oh, y'know. Latent superpowers.

[turnsignals]

Super-- [ He leans in, eyes going wide. ] You have superpowers? Since when?

[ Because dude, that is cool, but also a little creepy and keeping secrets from friends is bad, mkay? ]

[ On the one hand, it's not nice to lie to your friends. Especially someone as nice and also straight-laced as Wasabi, who really doesn't deserve being trolled like this (unlike, say, Fred, who get trolled without mercy in this situation). On the other hand ... when is he ever going to get this opportunity again? Never? Never. Decision made. ]

Well, I kind of had a feeling while I was making your upgrades? Didn't want you guys to think I was crazy so I never mentioned it.

[ Squiiiiiiint. Wasabi highly doubts that story, bro. ]

Really? Really really?

[ The next person he sees with a hoverboard is holding it. It's not on at the moment, otherwise he'd have more trouble holding onto it than he's currently having. He's examining it with only a limited amount of success.

This is more Elecman's thing, he'll be the first to admit, so he looks around for someone else who could probably utilise it better.

So there's a fairly tall (about six feet, or thereabouts) man walking towards you and just...here. Holding out a hoverboard for you to take. ]

Do you want it? I don't need it.

[turnsignals]

[ Uh. Okay, dude. Wasabi looks skeptical, but takes the offered hoverboard. ]

Really? You're just gonna... give it away?

[hypnotherapy]

[ Blank stare. Which is mildly creepy; most people's blank stares have a hint of something in them but it literally looks like he just. Switched off for a minute, there. ]

I can fix anything affected by viruses. Mechanical problems aren't my specialty. [ Or any navi's specialty, really. ]

I'm used to more efficient ways of moving around. I should get used to...basic movement first.

[ There's a hint of ruefulness in his tone. ] I'm not coordinated enough yet to use one, anyway. [ He may have tried. Just a little. ] My balance is...off.

[turnsignals]

[ Okaaayy, creepy stare. But Wasabi's attention is mostly on the hoverboard. Abesntly, he asks, ] More efficient ways like how? [ It still hasn't registered that not everybody here is human. ]

[hypnotherapy]

Cords. Wireless connections. If it connects to another device, I can use it to travel.

[ He grimaces, mildly. ] Though...not right now. [ Ugh, he doesn't like this body at all. This is going to take some getting used to. ] There's too much sensory input here. I don't know how you deal with this.

[ Okay, that merits Wasabi's attention. ]

You travel wirelessly? Electronically? Like... like a signal? [ He shakes his head, smiling. ] Now that is one useful superpower.

[Much like how Wasabi is trying not to freak, the same can be said for Drividot--he's never heard of flying machines this small--nor any self-respecting mother letting their child operate one. It's bizarre--and thus when the man ahead of him shouts about something as normal as permits and licenses, he can't help but let out a relieved laugh.]

Maybe there's an inspector's office to report them to?

Call the cops on 'em, huh? Maybe.

[ Except they're not really hurting anyone, and if he's honest with himself, he'd probably have wanted one of those at their age, if they'd been available.

Anyway, he turns to look at the guy who laughed. Who is. Grey. Definitely grey. ] ...Huh.

...On second thought, maybe not.

[Drividot smiles at him, and quite misses that he's being...stared at...in favor of a potential comrade to the strangeness of this new place. It ...still hasn't occurred to him that Duskwights such as himself--tall, grey, slender and pointy-eared--would be a terribly unusual sight. After all, he's used to the sight of hyur humans.] You're new here, too? [He asks hopefully.]

[ Blink. Bliiiink. Oh, he's being spoken to. ]

Yeah, I am. And I'm starting to get the feeling this place is more than just "Florida."

[All right, now he's catching on to being stared at, and self-consciously adjusts his clothes.] Florida? Never heard of it--but I guess you have?

[ Chise gravitated towards the first person who looked about as lost as her, but also taking in the technology advancements with more than simple curiosity. She cleared her throat and looked up, way up. ]

Do you...do you know how to make calls on these?

[ Holding up the smartphone the woman from the military gave her along with her file. Having never owned a cellphone much less a smartphone and going nearly a year living in the rural countryside she was out of her element, to the say the least. ]

[turnsignals]

[ Wasabi hears a voice and looks down. Way down. ]

Oh, yeah sure.

[ He takes the smartphone from her, and smiles down at her. ]

Do you know the number you're trying to call?

[deosil]

Oh, thank you.

[ She balked when he took her phone but didn't mind when it became apparent he knew what he was doing. ]

It's to England. [ She gives him the number and then, tentatively- ]

Are you from here? I've never seen technology like this.

[turnsignals]

Long distance, huh? Okay. [ It's her phone, her charges.

While it's dialing, he kneels down and hands it back to her. ]

Nah, I'm not from here either. I just know a bit about tech.

[ Except after a few rings, a harsh sound comes out of the speaker. ]

Huh. Looks like your number's not working.

[deosil]

Ah. So she wasn't lying about that different world business.

[ Chise reacted so flatly, simply resigned, she made the noble gases look volatile. ]

Thank you. What do you make of this?

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

[The next kid that comes zooming by on a hoverboard isn't... really a kid, actually. It's a teenager, and a brightly, almost eye-searing dressed one too. This particular teenager had stolen a board from a nearby child and was taking it out on a joyride, all without knowing how it worked. So the board zooms by at nearly twice the speed, does several loops high in the air and then comes zooming down, at the street, directly at Wasabi. Better get out of the way fast if he doesn't want to get hurt.]

[ Kids would be... kids wouldn't they? ]

Mother --!

[ That same kid managed to almost knock into another pedestrian not even three yards away. He was carrying a carrier of coffee (all for himself) and looked to stare after him for just a moment, like he was looking for something, before he turned around, his eyes narrowed. ]

Think if we submitted a proposal, we could make people get permits for that shit?
