TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

Luckily, she can see that the others with her are just as out of their element. She doesn't blame them one bit. ]
I guess it's too much to hope that this is just a dream. [ It's said dryly with a weak smile. ]
some dark alleyway at night
Sara stays close to the ground, close to the shadows. It's only when she comes across someone with their back to the wall, and an assailant advancing on them that she extends her staff and reveals herself. It's over in moments, the guy being nothing more than some lowlife with a knife. Once he's down on the ground, she spins her staff to tuck under her arm and turns to the other person. ]
You should get out of here.
( ooc: Feel free to be the rescuee or someone lurking nearby! )
alleyway
Though the stars are somewhat obscured by the haze of modern-day pollution, his keen sight reaches beyond what a mortal's would, allowing him to see these sky diamonds. So similar to the ones Elbereth created, though the scientists have assured him that these twinkling lights are other planets and not Valar-made.
He's been wandering around the city by himself, seemingly unarmed and available for mugging. At least according to the ruffian who tugged him into the little alley. There isn't more than a few minutes between the tugging and abruptly being saved, though. In fact, Elrond is still trying to figure out if the human is serious when Sara arrives.
And, you know, lends a hand to the over six and a half foot elf staring down at her bemusedly. That was a competent show of force, and the former herald knows all about force. ]
Are you injured, m'lady?
btw i should have mentioned she's in costume!
But hey, she doesn't discriminate.
Nor does she seem fazed by any of his six and a half feet. Though her mouth does quirk briefly at 'm'lady'. From most, it would come off as mocking, but he seems genuine enough. ]
Just a scratch. I've had worse. [ Much worse. ] Are you?
noted!
Once that is ascertained, the healer straighten back up and nods. ]
I am well, thank you. Your clothing ... it is [ Awkward pause. ] unusual. Why conceal your face?

His question, though... It's another mark of someone not from a world like hers. She's never been asked so frankly before. ]
To protect the people around me.
[ She's not afraid for herself, but she has and would still go to great lengths to prevent letting anything happen to the people she cares about. ]

Max sighs as she watches the man go down, not moving from her spot against the wall as she fishes a cigarette from a glittering silver case and lights it.]
Hasn't anyone told you not to break other peoples' toys?
[It's difficult to lure information out of someone if they're unconscious on the ground.]
no subject
In any case, she gathers from that response that her help hadn't been needed, or wanted. Usually it's one or the other, but both is interesting. ]
You were baiting him. What for?
no subject
[Max walks over, but only to nudge the man with the toe of her louboutins. She could wake him up with a little jolt of electricity, but she'd rather to show a stranger what she can do.]
He's rather small time in a local gang, but most men know more than they realize.
[and she could have gotten that information out of him, with a little persuasion.]
no subject
Information for who?
[ Testing the waters. Depending on her answer, it might be time to slip away. ]
no subject
[Nevermind that she is a criminal, but if this woman is a superhero, the response could suggest that she's one as well.
Or at least that Max is on the side of the angels.]
no subject
[ She's not taking that answer either way for now, but it is a strange one to give. Unless she's a vigilante? Her appearance doesn't exactly line up with that. ]
What were you planning to do once you got the information? Take them on singlehandedly?
no subject
[It's just a gang. She can handle that.]
no subject
[ And backup, but that might imply something more than she's willing to promise. ]
You should leave it to the police.

A superhero is telling me to leave something to the police?
[pot. kettle.]

alleyway !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All to feel like this was just an extension of home. That he had the same meaning, inspired the same fear here as he did back in Starling. It was safe. It was familiar. And it helped.
Now, though. Now it's become something else. He's been here long enough that he knows the streets, the rooftops. The sides of certain buildings have dents and pits from where he's glanced them with arrows, where a bullet's dug in as a desperate punk takes a shot at the figure in green. This city, as new as it is, as different as it may be, has begun to mean something. It's people are looking familiar, it's criminals are beginning to become wary about men with bows instead of just laughing and calling him Robin Hood.
But if there was anything that could make Oliver feel like he was back in Starling City, that he could round the corner and see that pizza place Laurel had loved during college, that if he traveled precisely fifteen miles to the west he could find himself at the dock he'd met Sara at almost six years ago, it's the sight of a figure dressed in black, a bright wig on her head, and a staff clotheslining the unfortunate lowlife she'd happened upon.
He watches, crouching at the edge of the fire escape above her, waiting as the person she'd rescued high tails it out of there before vaulting over the side, catching the railing of a lower floor once to slow his fall before landing on the ground.]
I didn't know you were in town.
[He should be saying something more-- familiar, he knows that. Should have said hello, thrown his hood back and embraced her. Something- anything that would go along with what Felicity had told him not too long ago. That sometime in the future the woman in front of him is gone. Dead. In a way that would make them sure of it. But he can't bring himself to. Can't say anything more than what he had, can't do more than channel everything he's heard into the warmth of his tone and try to forget that he might as well be talking to a ghost.]
ollie!!!!
I just got in a few days ago. Been laying low.
[ She hadn't had much of a choice, with the killer migraine that apparently being brought back from the brink of death came with. (Not 'brink of', her mind whispers but it's harder to think of it in those terms.)
She breaks down her staff and tucks it into the back of her belt. Then after making sure they're alone, she pulls off her mask and wig to face him properly. ]
Hi.
because Sara needs teenage girls to hang out with or something.
Lady is good. It's kind of awesome to watch, actually.
Probably Sara's first clue that the teenage girl she rescued isn't exactly normal is the fact that, while the guy's down, she approaches, uses her weight to keep him in place, and produces a heavy-duty zip tie to slip over the guy's wrist in makeshift handcuffs.] I'm pretty okay, actually. Thanks for stepping in. [It's sincere! Even if she didn't really need the help, she's not about to get mad that someone saw a teenage girl in danger and stepped up.]
she'll take her under her wing o7
Maybe it was even possible the girl had been luring him in to do her own damage control. That thought is a little more concerning. ]
Why was he after you?
\o/
In answer to the woman's question, though, she shrugs.] I don't know. I'm here, I guess. Do I look rich? [The answer is no.]
no subject
No. You look prepared.
[ Her words are accompanied by a pointed glance at the zip-tied guy on the ground. ]
no subject
[Seriously, Maurtia Falls? Kind of has the whole wretched hive of scum and villainy thing going on.]
no subject
[ Yeah, she's noticed. Kind of dark, kind of seedy, corruption on every street corner. Just like home.
Probably explains why she moved out here. But not why anyone else would, if given the choice. ]
What's your name?
no subject
[Should she give out her full name to a random person on the street? Eh, maybe not. But she's figuring Sara isn't exactly a threat to her, and if she is, then Rikki's got a bigger problem than names.] What do you call yourself?
alleyway
Locke feels nothing short of relief when she takes him out, slipping easily into the role of overwrought victim.]
Oh, gods save you! Thank you! Thank you so much! He just-I was just walking and-Oh, I can't thank you enough! Saved my life, you did, a true hero! [He put on a good show of blubbering, rushing over quickly to grip and squeeze her shoulders. The onslaught of praise continues until he feels like he's adequately drowned her at which point he steps back and takes out the mugger's wallet-a small memento palmed from his attempted murderer. He opens it at a precise angle so she can see all the money within it-a good deal for a thief-and fishes out a twenty, thinks about it, and plucks forth another.] Please, please, allow me to show my thanks. Really, you've saved me.
no subject
Especially when he pulls out the man's wallet. She doesn't make any motion towards taking the offered money. Not that the guy didn't have it coming to him, but. ]
You sure you want to do that?
