TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.
Eli Bradley / Patriot || Marvel 616 (Young Avengers)
[Patriot looks extremely uncomfortable as he crouches down to take a picture with a little kid. This isn't- Cap gets respect back at home, sure, and the YA had eventually gotten a nice reputation... but this? This is completely out of his comfort zone.
But the little guy had looked so eager, he just couldn't say no.]
04.
[WHO'S JUMPING IN FRONT OF THE CAR? Eli is jumping in front of the car. He could have tried to get the kids out of the way but who has time to think fast and do the most obvious thing in this kind of situation, really.]
eli!! also #4!
Gil knows not to get in the way of a moving vehicle, but like most onlookers he's worried about the kids who are about to get hit when there's a streak of blue and it's some other kid who's trying to get them out of the way. ]
Hey, watch out!
eeeh
But at least he managed to deviate the course just enough so the kids don't get hit. And then Eli just kind of... flops on top of the car. So maybe he won't have to wait until tomorrow for it to hurt.]
...Too old for this...
no subject
How is he still able to breathe after that collision? ]
Hold on, don't move yet! [ In the case something's broken, but it doesn't... appear to be the case? ] Are you alright?
no subject
I think I am? [Getting superpowers from someone else has these issues: Just how much of his grandfather's strength did he got? Does Isaiah have the same strength the current Captain America has? Could Captain America have stopped the car and end up uninjured? So many questions, sometimes you just had to jump in front of a car and hope for the best.]
I mean, I can breathe so no punctured lungs- are the kids alright?

HOLY SHIT ELI i mean 4
What the hell is--
[ super strength or not, imminent hospitalization is no way to get a team back together. he leaves the kids on the sidewalk and dives at Eli. if he's lucky, he'll tackle him before the car does. ]
/o/ SORRY I'M RUSTY AT HIM
I- What... [A second ago he was in front of the car, waiting to be hit, bruised and probably with a lot of broken bones as a reminder of the situation. Now he can see the kids are safe, the car is still running and he was somehow pulled out of the way in a mater of miliseconds.
Guess who.]
Speed?
he's beautiful, you're beautiful
The one and only. It's been a while, Patriot.

The tourists are always like this. Take it as a compliment.
[he says smoothly in reply to Eli's awkwardness.]
no subject
They probably mean well, but it's still awkward. I don't like, you know- [A vague motion with his hand.] the attention, I guess?
no subject
[there's a punchline somewhere, and he seems somewhat satisfied with the low quality of (what seems to be) a joke.
Eli didn't know him, but he knew Eli, probably more than comfort would allow, but he doesn't really seem ready to indulge. despite that, he's friendly, casual and charming enough.]

Not that a little kid would want a picture with Eli, because awwww, that's cute - it's that Eli is actually crouching down and smiling like this as his mom takes the picture and thanks him, and Billy just stares.]
Dude.
Duuuude.
You just got Captain America'd.
wow FAIL
Captain America is like a rock star, this kid just liked the uniform. I'm seriously never going to get used to this.
I saw nothing
[Ow, punched! Okay, not ow, because even with super strength, Eli knows how to pull his punches. But Billy is grinning back.]
That's why I don't wear the cape in public anymore. Do you want something a little less photogenic?
[It's just a single spell away, after all.]

All the same, she's figured out precisely where that module is, and in a risky move, she dashes forward, drawing her bowstring back to her chin, arrow in hand, and lets it loose. The arrow itself is a trick one: set to create a very, very minor explosion within two seconds of impact. Kate rolls back and shouts to Eli (and the kids):] It should be good, but take care of them!
[This is what teamwork was invented for, after all.]
no subject
There's a little explosion, a sound similar to a crash... and the car crashing into him he was expecting never actually comes. He looks down to make sure the kids are alright, and then up towards where Kate's voice came from.]
Well, that's a way to do it.
no subject
[Kate doesn't stay there long. She rises up, and while she knows the cops will be moving in soon enough, there's a very large part of her that isn't keen on sticking around. Icky registration business, it can get the best of them.
Then again, Kate's done this song and dance before, so she doesn't even think twice before she swings her bow over her shoulder, and she goes to join Eli. There's a part of her that's concerned with slinking off into the shadows, but she's frankly ... relieved to see him. It's been a long time, and his absence had done a number on the team as a whole. While they fought over leadership, she still wishes he had been there in Teddy's absence, there to help keep Billy steady in a way that she never could. They had gotten into this together, after all, and she's wondered numerous times if Eli could've helped Billy step out of that apartment much sooner.
And that's not even counting her own, extremely complicated feelings. Time, more than anything, has helped her move on. For her, it's been years, and there's no sensation of similar feelings rushing back because of that. But that's complicated in and of itself.
No matter what it is, though, she's glad to see him, and even if they have to move, she's motioning for him to join her with a smile.] I think we're all good, but we might want to get moving.

He doesn't have faith in having enough speed to grab the other guy, so instead he just stands beside him to take the edge off some of the impact. Two guys with superstrength are better than one, right?
Or at least he hopes he has superstrength.]
Re: 04
Instead he finds himself facing a guy (maybe? is that an alien? or is it a supersuit?) in a bright blue armor who's taken the blunt as well. Well, he isn't going to complain about it.]
What do you think you're doing? [Oh, maybe he is.]

He just spreads his arms out in front of him and shrugs.]

the heck is that and where did that come from. He looks like him, or at least has the same build as him. It's had to tell with his old costume. And why is he wearing his old costume anyway?]
Who are you supposed to be?
04!
of course, it's a little tough juggling multiple kids and one superhero legacy, even for miss america, so they're going to find themselves unceremoniously dumped on the sidewalk nearby not too long after.
you're welcome. ]
no subject
He turns his attention to the kids for a second- they seem to be safe, and actually pretty excited to have been saved by two heroes (even if Patriot is pretty sure just standing in front of a car and hoping for the best doesn't really count as saving them). Once he's sure they are safe, he looks back at her with a scowl.]
Do I look like a cat to you?
