TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

at this time, though, fate decides he startle to a stop when he hears the bike vendor popping out of his storefront to yell at someone about what will happen if they're putting their grubby mitts on that bike–] Yipe–!!
[-it makes Manabu hitch a step and bump Tadashi.] Ooph, sorry!
no subject
Sorry! Was just admir-- Whoa!
[And then he's bumped into and knocked off balance. He reaches to try and steady the other guy but inexplicably finds himself backfisting him out of his way]
Whoa! Okay-- I did not mean to do that!
no subject
while Manabu gets his bearings back, Tadashi's getting another earful – about pushing people around, rather than bikes. he winces and speaks up to interject:]
I-it's alright! Really. No harm done! [he tries to smile convincingly, looking a little queasy in spite of it.] Let's not get riled up about it. [and accidentally start pummeling the shit out of him. please?]

But there's something special about that hoverboard. Mostly in the fact that belongs to a scrawny little teenager inside that shop now, talking his way into buying some soldering equipment. For some reason, shopkeepers are a little bit leery of selling that kind of stuff to a kid who looks closer to twelve than fifteen. But Hiro convinces him in the end, so out he comes with a bag full of promising little boxes. He is already loving this whole "work for Tony Stark and get paid way more money than he knows what to do with" life.
Slinging the bag into his backpack, he twists his way past the parked hoverbike and towards his board. In fact, he nearly bumps into Tadashi as he reaches for it. It's only when he turns to offer a casual "sorry" that he realizes that he recognizes the person standing next to him.
All the blood drains from his face. The bag drops from between his suddenly nerveless fingers, crashing against the ground in what is probably a fatal crack for his new soldering iron. But that's the last thing on his mind here, staring up at his brother like he's seen a ghost. He can't even form words at first. His mouth has gone utterly dry. Is he dreaming? This has to be a dream, right? There's no way - he can't possibly believe that's - ]
Tadashi?
no subject
It's the bag dropping that got his attention. Tadashi looks down at it, then from the feet upward at the kid who dropped it and-- ]
Hiro?
[ Okay so that's ... One big relief off his mind, Hiro being here and not home where he himself isn't. But that means Hiro's mixed up in all this too. And why does he look like Tadashi just came back from the dead? He bends down a little, nothing but concern on his face. ]
Are you okay?

He rushes forward abruptly, putting both arms around his brother and squeezing hard. ]

No.
[ It can't be. Tadashi's dead. ]
I live to serve through terrible puns
[He smiles helping the kid back up to his feet and then his friend. They're on their way with only a few minor scrapes now. Tadashi pats himself down making sure he's in one piece and... Right, he dropped his things. Annnnd then there's the crowd to deal with. Oh boy.]
Uh-- Excuse me! Gotta- get through here-- They're fine! I'm fine, just if I could--
[There, made it and he can get across the street once he gets his breath. Life saving is nerve wracking.]

4. Hope this is fine?
With a shaky breath she lets out a laugh, not quite registering the tingling scrapes all over her knees or the fact her own file is now scattered all over the intersection. ]
Wow-- talk about close calls!
absolutely! *A*
[He looks back to where the cars sped around the next curve and out of sight before looking at the kid. He smiles though, they seem like she's all right. And that's what matters.]
Yeah. And you're okay?
[He's already looking her over for any major injuries poking out anywhere.]

The crowd parts, mostly because he is in some ways exuding an aura of "i don't actually care about you get out of my way" and it's a useful trick to have. ]
You dropped your files. [ He holds them out. ] You humans are strange ones, aren't you.

[ Out? Jack alights on the sidewalk at a jog, hurrying over as he drops out of the sky to check on the young man who just played hero. He's glad he did, immensely so, having been a little too far away himself to do anything about it. If he had a pulse, it would be thundering right now.
The kid is already healing, rapid response on that undoubtedly a superpower (thank God), but the guy ... ]
You okay, man? You just saved these kids, did the car get you at all?
no subject
I don't think it did, no. I don't feel anythi-whoa. [He finally turned and look at the speaker and ... That is. One pale guy. It definitely throws him off; he should have expected it with everything else he's seen here but wow. He redirects his thoughts back to the question.]
Yeah, I'm fine.

A crowd is definitely gathering, but Barnaby knows that doesn't necessarily mean people will get the medical attention they need. For that reason, he urgently pushes his way through, his powersuit serving as a pretty good indicator that he means business.]
Is anyone hurt? [He's hoping he doesn't need to call an ambulance.]
no subject
Wait, all right. Kids' safety first, geek second.]

He's well known enough that he's used to the crowds and they know what he's capable of after being around so long as he has. But they still seem interested in the new guy that also helped.
So Ed helps out, elbowing his way through the crowd and telling them to back off after seeing Tadashi helping the other kid up.]
See? All fine. We're okay here.
[After waving most of the crowd away he turns to Tadashi.]
You all right?

And the kids are okay.
He lets out a breath as his servos unlock and he can move again. The papers of his files had started to flutter away and he gathers them as quickly as he can, stuffing them back into the folder and CLANK CLANK CLANKing over to where Tadashi is on the ground with the kids.]
Are you all right? That was incredibly brave! Are the children okay? [He holds out the folder for him to take, trying to check he and the kids for any serious wounds. Looks like just scrapes.]
no subject
He takes the files and pushes himself up, only some soreness making him stop here and there.]
I think they'll be fine, just a little shaken up. Thanks, by the way. [He gestures with his folder.]
